Auto RX with Conventional or Group 3 for a Turbo

Hi all

Firstly I think Auto RX is a great product.
I am only 700 miles into my first cleaning phase using Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and am very happy with the improvement in the way the car feels.

I have a 1999 Volvo S70 T5 with 130miles on the clock, it is modified to 300bhp and the turbo is pushing 17psi and I have replaced the PVC system.

Things I hope will improve from the Auto RX heavy sludge application

• Engine has a significant amount of blow by
• Oil burning due to valve stem seal
• The Engine compression was 150, 156, 150, 155, 151
• Chances of passing an emissions test in a month or so

I am toying (tormented) with the idea of using conventional oil for the rest of the Auto RX treatments. To give me the best chance to pass the emissions test and stop the oil burning ASAP.

I guess I am looking for even more reassurance that I am not going to hurt my turbo if I drive it hard with conventional oil, also would your recommendation change if I was going to do a track day.

I am very interested in your opinion as this is my first turbo car and I don’t know much about oil.

Use Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 on this engine for clean and rinse. Don't use a 5w30 in your particular engine. I find PP exhibits above-average consumption rates in these engines whenever I've used it. Neither of these are what I would loosely call a conventional. They're both fairly advanced Group III formulas. They should be fine in your engine at the ARX intervals. I assume you are not tracking the car during this period.

ARX works relatively quickly on ring packs. If you've still got heavy blow-by after 700 miles, I'm not sure ARX can fix that. But give it a little more miles before being sure. A '99 has the improved ring pack design, so if you are having heavy consumption after ARX, you've got a problem.

ARX won't fix worn out cylinders, which on a T-5 modded that much might be possible, depending on how it was treated.
 
I may have confused thing I know that PP is a group 3 I was tossing up the idea of using conventional for the rest of the treatments to use Auto-Rx to it best possible performance.

Thanks for the info, I had read some good thing about RTS,i will give it a go.

The car uses 1L per 4000km on flat ground.

The oil burning only appears once I have come to a stop after engine breaking down a hill for an extended period 26hg vacuum. The only way to stop it is to give it some gas i.e. positive pressure.

I assume it’s a stem seal?
 
Engine braking is most likely the cause of your consumption. The high vacuum is causing small amounts of oil to be sucked past the rings into the cylinder during the intake stroke.

A simple way to test this is to clutch in instead of engine braking. Monitor consumptions : )

I have a S70T5 150K, just finished the clean phase and it's on the rinse phase now.

I put in 6.1 quarts of Mobil 5000 conventional and 6.1 came out after 2,000 miles. I am thrilled. I was consuming 1 quart every 1k. For the last 10K. Turbo blow by and whatever else.

Use Mobil 5000 and don't sweat it. Too many overthink the situation. Keep it simple. I used 5/30, it will be fine.

Update!!!

Did a compression test yesterday and the results are in

Before Auto RX
150, 156, 150, 155, 151


After 1,576miles of Auto RX Cleaning and a can of Seafoam through the fuel tank.
181, 183, 183, 180, 180

I was amazed at the results and then annoyed that I put that Seafoam in the tank and corrupted the test. :)

I added the Seafoam because I noticed the car was smoking a little at startup in the morning and thought the combustion chambers could use some extra cleaning. I have read some good results with Seafoam through the intake improving compression (which I plan to do after Auto RX treatments) but don’t know how much it would have helped in the gas.

Engine has minimal blow by now.

Because I had someone helping me I got to watch the needle on compression tester and noticed on cylinder No 4 it would climb to 150 flicks to 180 but then fall to 150 and then on the next crank would get to 180 and hold?
It did it this the first 2 times and acted normal the next 2?

On cylinder No 5 it would take more cranks to get to 180. I think it was 7 instead of 5?

Thanks for the idea I had not thought of oil passing by the rings I was thinking more about turbo seals or stem seals.
Yes I have been rolling down mountains and cooking my brakes rather than burn up the Auto RX I will test the engine breaking once I am on the rinse phase.

Good to here your positive results and I am leaning towards conventional oil for the rest of the treatments. But still interested in opinions

Any Volvo guys know what the compression specs are for this engine?

Just found the compression specs on Volvospeed

“VADIS mentions the compression should read between 1.1 - 1.3 MPa which is roughly 160 - 189 PSI.”

On a side note both dry compression tests where done with a cold engine.
 
Ring cleanining occurs quite quickly with ARX. Normally occurs within 1000 miles of the cleaning phase of the application in most cases. Plenty of heat and pressure available for ARX to work fast.
