my dad has a 96 cavalier 76k miles, all original, oil changed every 3k miles with Castrol gtx and recently switched to GTX HM and changing oil every 3k miles.

Is Auto rx necessary?

the car does burn oil and has been doing so ever since new, probably a quart every 3 k miles or more using 10-30 and more using 5-30.

if i do need it how should i use it?

That's Frank pitching his product.

It does work quite well. Will it do as claimed? Yes. Is the cost worth the gains? Only you can be the judge of that.

I agree, don't use "snake oil."

Definitely use the Auto-Rx - Good stuff!

Snake oil is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat joint pain. However, the most common usage of the phrase is as a derogatory term for compounds offered as medicines which implies that they are fake, fraudulent, quackish, or ineffective. The expression is also applied metaphorically to any product with exaggerated marketing but questionable or unverifiable quality.

Another vote here for a-rx. Many people highly critical of it didn't use it (or use it correctly)

I used it in a 160K+ miles I-6 Ford that had religious 3K changes; felt like a new engine after 2 treatments.

Me too. ARX fixed the transmission in the Miss's 91 Civic and greatly reduced the varnish inside the engine. Better mpg too.

so it said to keep it in for 2500 miles, can i put in new oil run it without RX for 500 miles and then add it for 2500 miles to make the 3000 miles?

Also is anyone selling any? im willing to buy some off someone if its cheaper then the price online, its kind of steep

You need to order 2 or 3 containers to make the price reasonable.

You can always run a compression test and compare it to the specs and pull valve cover and see just how dirty. If the compression is close to spec, then little crud in the ring pack. Next how dirty is the valve cover, that will be indicative of other areas in the engine that tend to sludge up. If its clean, and compression is good then your engine is in pretty good shape.

An alternative is to just go onto the maint. plan for Auto-Rx, that is add 3 oz. to every oil change and change oil normally.

Yes, you can go on the maintenance plan using a "high mileage" oil. With 76,000 on the clock, I'd recommend the full cleaning before starting on maintenance!

i will be ordering the Rx today. so far i am getting 2 , 1 for this car and one for another car i will be buying sometime this year.

So i will be putting a full 12 oz bottle with 4 qts of castrol gtx 10-30 and almost a full quart of 10-40.

super tech oil filter

Drive the car 2500 miles. Which is mostly city, is that ok or should i take it for a highway drive every weekend?

After 2500 miles switch to Valvoline Maxlife syn. blend , since i heard its good , probably better then GTX HM.

If i would continue doing maintainance plan on the car i would need a 3rd bottle.

Is it ok if i dont do a maintainance plan?

what are the extra benefits of it?
with 3 oz in each oil change and my car burning oil i dont see it doing much change.

Any input would be appreciated.
i want to know if i am doing this right

I would hold off on the Maxlife change until you do another 3000 miles on dino oil with no arx. That's the rinse phase where most of the cleaning happens..:P

50k miles? Wow im fine with that, i wonder if the engine will stall have it in it to get 50 k more miles.

ok so im thinking Gtx dino now for clean phase, valvoline dino for rinse phase and then maxlife? sound good?

ps. how long does auto-rx usually take to be shipped to my house?

Auto-Rx should be there in 2 days, has been my experience. Any decent dino oil for the clean and rinse phase is fine. I normally get the 5 Qt jug of a name brand at Wallymart along with a Supertech filter. No need for an expensive filter for the clean and rinse phases. Its your choice of oil after its rinsed.
I went back to Mobil 1 in the 5 Qt jug from Wallymart with the maint. dose of Auto-Rx.
