I have been told, for the life of Chrysler, they just cant make a good transmission. I have been told just to put ATF+4 and nothing more.

I have used Lucas on my 1988 caddy, and loved it! I used Lucas on every thing I could on this car and it is up to 210,000 miles! After reading about this stuff though and finding this web site I don't really want to try Lucas in the Chrysler unless I HAVE to.

So any way will Auto-RX mix with ATF+4 transmission fluid or will it hurt the Chrysler Transmission in any way? Any one out there ever try this stuff on (own) Chrysler?

Thanks

If there is nothing wrong with it, and you haven't mentioned any problem, I would say let it just keep the ATF+4. +4 is a VERY high quality fluid. The lucas stuff is just "tranny snot" really. I would NOT add it to any tranny personally. And those 604/606 series trannies are kinda picky, its why Chrysler pushed so hard for most to convert to +4 over +3. I wouldn't mess with a 604/606 series with many adds. They cost a butt load to fix and when they start acting funny, its a headache. I have TONS of neighbors with dead dodge/chrysler machines because that series of tranny started acting up.

ARX is safe in a tranny and will keep it clean. You want to avoid things that modify "friction characteristics" like Lucas, Lubeguard BLACK(red is said to be ok). I would even be nervous about things like LC20.

If your tranny is ok now, best thing to do for it is make sure you change fluid and filter when recommended, and possibly look to a cooler. Heat is Enemy #1 to a tranny.

"why do you say that?" Lucas and it's foam problem.

How can I tell if I have a 604/606 tranny?

Cooler? Where could I find one and what is it? Is it a liquid or some sort of air intake?

OK cool, looks good, but how/where would it go? Would I be able to do this my self or would I need to go to Midas or chrysler to have it done? BTW psudaytona, thanks for the help.

Your tranny already has a cooler : it's built into the radiator. And you may also find an auxiliary transmission oil cooler (like a very small radiator ) in front of the radiator. My Intrepid has a 42LE transmission which I *think* (not positive) is also known as the A604. It uses the cooling arrangement I mentioned.

What's been said about the Chrysler transmissions and ATF +4 is true. This is one series of transmission you don't want to dink around with. ARX well may be the only safe additive for these units, but I've resisted adding it to mine.

Good to know va3ux thanks. So no adding a transmission cooler then? Thanks, oh how many mile do you have on your intrepid?

My wife and I each drive a 96 Intrepid. Both cars have around 130k miles and their original transmissions. I change fluid about once a year. Have used Mopar +3, AMSOIL, and Conklin +3, and the cars have been happy w/ all these fluids. I would not hesitate to use +4, either, I just haven't yet. I think preventive maintenance is very important for these units.

va3ux, If your mopar tranney hasn't seen the great care and maintenance as performed byzrxkawboy, then you may well want to run the transmission dose of ARX and the recommended mileage before your change out. ARX is the safest bet to remove any life threatening deposits before it becomes an issue. My 2 cents.
