I did some searching in this forum and in the “ATF, Differential, Trans, Brake, P/S” forum and I only see a couple of posts about ARX in manual transmissions. Even the forum on the auto-rx website only has one or two posts about it. Why is this? Do people tend to not use ARX in manual transmissions?

I have a manual transmission with 100,000 miles on it. It’s had regular gear oil changes with synthetic gear oil its whole life. It shifts well, but I’m sure with 100,000 miles on it, it’s got some wear, especially on the syncros. Shifting takes a little bit more force than I would like. Not so much that I would even think about rebuilding the transmission, but if a simple application of auto-rx improved things, that would be worth it.

I’d like to hear from someone who’s put auto-rx into a manual with high mileage. What was the effect? Did shifting become easier or smoother? Did it seem to help your syncros?

One last question. The auto-rx website says one application in a manual transmission lasts for the life of the transmission. Why is this?

I have used it in a manual trans. Mostly to get rid of another additive but I'm sure the cleaning didn't hurt. Don't really know if it improved shifting because I used a different oil after. You probably don't need it but it can't hurt either.

Well first manual transmissions only make up les then 1% of the market in the USA and only 10% of fleet sales! So buy default their are more people with automatics then manuals. Second most people never have to do anything besides replace a clutch and maybe a rear seal on their manual transmissions for the life of the vechile. So this is why. It was discussed a lot when Auto-Rx first hit this forum a long long time ago. If my memory serves me right you only need to add 1 once to your transmission and not more then 6 onces to an automatic but I could be wrong things have changed a lot since then. If it where me I would add 6 onces to the manual transmission and fill with conventional gear lube. Drive it for 10,000 miles then refill with the synthetic of your choice. If you decide that your seals are fine and do not need any help then just add 6 onces to the synthetic oil you normaly use and leave it in their for the entire oil change interval.

I know for sure that powersteering only needs 1 once and you are supposed to flush it after 1200 miles.

A cleaning application in a manual transmission is quite simple and requires very little ARX. I used it in a manual 5 speed in my past 1990 S-10 truck. As I recall the fluid in this manual transmission was Dexron II oddly enough. According to the owners manual the fluid was good for life. But we know better. The oil capacity is quite small, as I recall only around two quarts in this gear box. I merely added 2 fluid ounces to the existing fluid and ran it for 800-1000 miles. Shifting improved fairly early on in that duration. Then I merely drained and refilled. It was a piece of cake. I wish I had that old truck back. I had it for 10 years and never had a lick of trouble.

Would there be any problems or objections with running a small 'maintenance dose' in a manual transmission, like 50k miles in synthetic gear oil?

I just finished a ARX treatment on my 2004 S2000. It has 40K miles now and I've been averaging 5-7K OCI's on this 6 speed MT. Honda says to use their MTF, but 10w30 engine oil can be used in a temporary pinch. Anyone who has driven a S2000 will usually comment on how much they love the transmission, including myself. But unfortunately, the fluids don't seem to last very long (and I've tried several). 1-2 shifts become more crunchy when fluid is cold, and all shifts become more notchy. So I decided to try cleaning it with ARX and a 60/40% blend of AMSOIL MTF and MTG. I used 3 ozs. of ARX for the 1.75 qt capacity. The cleaning phase was un-remarkable. In fact, it was pretty lousey compared to other fresh fills in this transmission. I drained and refilled after 1K miles yesterday with the new Honda MTF. After only a couple of short drives, I'm impressed with the smooth shifting. It's too early to give a usefull assessment though.
The only reservation I had about using ARX in this transmission was the fact that it has carbon fiber coated synchros. I was anxious about how ARX would react to carbon fiber. Since Frank garrantees his product to be safe with any transmission, I decided to go with it.
I know this info is incomplete for you, but maybe it will help you decide whether to try ARX.

The application instruction calls for 1 ounce of Auto-Rx in your transmission for 1000 miles, than drain (not 3 ounces you need to drop this fluid and refill with just brand new fluid) i am sure it is lousy suprised it is not slipping. Please just refill with aproved fluid.

Is there some reason why the application instructions are not followed ? are they to hard to fine ? Auto-Rx can.t hurt anything and is perfectly safe, even with overfill applications.

We are open to suggestions, overfilling is self defeating.

This is the applicatio ratio.

Manual Transmission

The application ratio is 1 ounce of Auto-RX® per quart of oil. Drive 1,000 miles and drain the Auto-RX® and oil. Refill according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. The application will last for the life of your manual transmission.

I apologize Frank. I used 2 ozs. in the 1.75 quart sump, not 3 ozs. If that's overfill, then I guess I messed up. None of the 6 gears (or reverse) ever slipped. The clutch didn't either. The 1000 mile clean was uninspiring, but I have a smile on my face now.

Thanks everyone… I didn’t hear the praise for auto-rx in a manual transmission that I hear for auto-rx in an engine. The claims for engines make it sound like a wonder product, the claims for manual transmissions far less so.

Two people suggested putting 1 oz/qt in the transmission and just leaving it there until the next scheduled change. That sounds like a good idea, but Frank didn’t seem to pick up on it, meaning I think he disapproves of this idea.

Maybe what I’ll do is wait until I’m 1,000 miles away from my next scheduled change, and add 1 oz/qt of auto-rx then. I’m 10,000 miles into a 30,000 OCI on this transmission, so it will be a while before this happens… Sure, I could treat it now, but that seems like a waste of the perfectly good oil that’s currently in the transmission. Perhaps if I had heard the same praise I hear for engines I would have considered that. Putting 1 oz/qt in a leaving it in for the next 20,000 miles would have worked for me, but like I said, I don’t think Frank approves of that idea.

Kang,Auto-Rx FAQ and Tech Board answers most every question you have. We have a transmission section on the "Tech Board" you could have got any transmission question you have answered by people who use and know the product.

Confederate Tyrant there is no way i am able to get get more definitive on my answers to many questions on this board without getting involved into the patent chemistry . We created the Auto-Rx Tech Board to answer technical questions, give it a try.
Thanks

Kang, You just answered your own question.

I don't know how old your car is with the manual transmission. But why put in the cleaning dose for 20,000 miles. There is no filtration on a munual trans. Why do you want to dissolve and suspend spent oil deposits and possibly metal fines for 20,000 miles?

Follow the instructions for best results.

Well that's all well and dandy Frank, but when I need to hear Auto-RX information I take Rick20 and dbdeland's posts, since theirs are at least halfway comprehendable.

I've visited your forum, several times, and the same two users (Rick20 and dbdeland) on here provide the same comprehendable posts on there as well. So nothing new to gain by going only to that forum.

OK, it's been about 5-600 miles since finishing my ARX treatment. Even though the 2 ozs of ARX, 1 qt of AMS MTF, and 3/4 qt of AMS MTG in my transmission for the clean phase was painful, the end result has been fantastic. The Honda MTF in there now is working great! I think the ARX treatment was worth the effort.
