Auto-RX & HM Oils

I am planning to order some Auto-RX for a friend of mine that seems to have a rear main leaking a bit. He just changed, in the last few hundred miles, his oil to either Pennzoil or Quaker State High Mileage.

I'm thinking that as soon as I can get the Auto-RX he could just dump it in and start the process unless there is a problem with using High Mileage oils for the process. I know conventional oil is preferred, but not sure if High Mileage will cause a problem.

You don't want high mileage oil's there additive pack is not condusive for stopping leaks. In fact it is just the opposite.

I find this interesting because I thought that was one of the functions of a High Mileage oil? If not stopping leaks, what is the purpose of seal conditioners?

This doesn't make any sense to me either. All of the web pages for the High Mileage oils from the various manufacturers specifically state that these oils have special seal conditioners to rejeuvenate seals and stop leaks. And now we have Frank stating the exact opposite is true. Ahem....

The special seal conditioners consist of agents that swell seals. Auto-Rx cleans the seal material front & back.( We don't swell seals) We utilize the 'simple addive package"
used in non synthetic oil to restore pliability to the seals stopping the leak.

By the way when you swell seals you cause seal material to weaken.

My friend has a Jeep with the 4.0L engine. How successful would be be running half a bottle following the "seal leak" application instructions? His budget is extremely tight so if he had a great chance of success with only one bottle I'm sure he would want to try it that way. I would guess that his engine is sludged up a bit, but I don't know for sure.

Blackdiamond, The 4.0L engine holds about 6 qts, if it's sludged up a bit, then keep in mind, no additive can play favorites on which areas to work on, if there's a full engine of sludge, I would expect it to take a full few treatments to clean up and start to help the seals.

I think it's worth convincing your friend to skip a few burgers and do the ARX treatments.

switch him to a HDEO afterwards, extend his changes to 10-15k. that'll save him money in the long run.
