Just bought a 95 Toyota 4x4 4cyl. 5 speed w/ 125,000 miles. Uses some oil although it does'nt leak or smoke. Hopefully this treatment will help. Have been running valvoline 20W50 and it'll use up to a qt. by 2,000 miles. What weight and brand should I use after the RX? And any suggestions on what to run through the gas tank to help clean the injectors?

One quart per 2000 miles is normal for this engine
at your mileage. You might be able to bump it up to
3000 miles per quart if you clean the throttle body plate
(butterfly valve) and surrounding bore of all the gummy
deposits that have built up. Better dealers do this automatically
at every tune up. No fuel or oil additive will clean up this
crud. It must be manually removed using a toothbrush and
some old rags soaked in throttle body cleaner or carburetor
cleaner. The long plastic tube that connects the throttle body
to the air filter box must be removed to gain access to the
throttle body plate and bore.

Toyota makes a special fuel injector cleaner additive that
you add to the gas tank. It costs around $7-10 available
from Toyota dealers. However, the 22R-E engine is not prone to
injector troubles if the fuel filter is changed at least every
60,000 miles.

On your oil fill cap and in your owners manual it says to use 10W-30 oil.

Ok i'll go back to the 10W30. Do think synthetic would do any good now givin the miles on the truck? If so, what brand do you recommend?

Rando, you'd need to take the valve cover off to determine how clean the insides of the engine are. If there is no sludge then you can keep on using dino oil. Quite a few owners of this engine have gone 400-600,000 miles on dino oil.

The main advantage of synthetic oil is that you can drive 50-100% longer between oil changes.

is it wise to spray the trottle body, butterfly with carborator/brake cleaner fluid??? i never did mine and i have 165k on my car.

i heard that u can leave ur car on and spray inside teh throttle body and let the engine die, and the nexxt day start it and then a bunch of black stuff will come out ur exaust...is this true

Not brake cleaner. OK for throttle body cleaner.

I like to remove the dirt with a soft cloth wetted with the throttle body cleaner. I don't want to just loosen the dirt and then put it through the engine.

digitaldrifter91, throttle body cleaner and carb. cleaner are sometimes separate products and sometimes combined into one product. Manufacturers vary in their recommendations. Chrysler, for example, wants you to use only a product labeled exclusively as a Throttle body cleaner. Chrysler says this is because it uses a special coating on the throttle body bore that carb cleaner might damage. Gumout makes one of these exclusive throttle body cleaners that you can buy at auto parts stores.

Toyota, on the other hand, says carb. cleaner is OK to use on the throttle body. Just spray small amounts of cleaner on the throttle body bore and butterfly valve, then scrub the parts clean with a toothbrush soaked in cleaner and with old (but clean) rags soaked in cleaner. Scrub with the brush, wipe up the goo with the rags. Keep repeating until everything is clean. Do not flood parts or the space behind the butterfly valve with cleaner because sensitive parts like the throttle position sensor could be damaged. Let The toothbrush and old rags do most of the work.
