This tested extreme pressure performance of a number of different oils. I realize there is more to motor oil performance than extreme pressure, but this did show how well the different oils are at metal to metal contact.

I believe it might be relavent to flat tappet or roller lifter engines using very much spring pressure. (especially racing)

What I was amazed with, was Royal Purple. A HUGE percentage of racers use this stuff, and it seems to work in the real world... but if you look at a standard oil analysis, it doesn't show much. What exactly is their "Synerlec" additive, anyway?

Then I'm going to say yes there are maybe one or two folks here out of nearly 17000 who haven't seen that posted. (Maybe once every two weeks) I'm not so sure this applies to roller cam action or flat tappet or other load surface in an ICE. The important thing is that the very same magazine came out with a follow-up article saying that the test was bogus and they would run a full up true shoot out of the oils. I don't think they have done this yet, or rather it may still be in progress.

I don't bad mouth other products, and some racers use RP - but it's not a "HUGE percentage of racers". And in the real world, for years the ship was out on RP. In my book it came in recently with as you mention standard used oil analysis. It's not a bad oil don't take this wrong, but it's a limited series of oils.
 
Hi, this is like the 5th time this test has been posted. The test is completely irrelevant to how well an oil will actually protect inside an engine. Another reason Amsoil should stop using the 4-ball wear test.

I don't know about the test being totally bogus. Incomplete maybe, but it is what it is. There's something in RP that helped it with extreme pressure. Something that didn't show up in the standard oil analysis.

RP is indeed used very heavily in drag racing.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll use the SEARCH function to look for more info on this subject.

Mike, many many oils are used in drag racing. The reason why this test is invalid is that the test was done with the oil at room temperature. Many many additive packages in oils are activated with temperature and pressure, especially the high pressure anti wear additives.

The test you have is quite valid for machinery running at room temperature. However, for engines running with an oil temperatures of between 200F and 300F, it is quite invalid.

I'd have to disagree with this statement. If you believe what you hear, a large part of engine wear occurs at cold start-up... when metal to metal contact is more likely to occur, and well before the engine gets up to temperature. I would believe oil protection before the engine is fully warm is very important.

I still think extreme pressure protection is very important... especially in racing engines. Many of these have roller lifters that have 'point' contact with very steep cam lobes, pushing against valve springs with open pressures well over 600lbs. The pressures of the roller against the camshaft are incredible when the engine is turning at high rpm. INCREDIBLE forces are required to lift the valves that fast with those springs.

RP is extremely popular in drag racing. I was also wondering what exactly their 'Synerlec' additive really is? Standard oil analysis tests don't explain theiir extreme pressure performance.

Slow down...don't pick a fight over a "test" which may be deemed by some as invalid.

Then don't start talking about engine wear at warm-up in the same post as drag racing...it's just not credible.

Synerlec, do patent search on RP. After 40-50 hours of effective reading you might have some good idea if they have something other than a trade name. Then bring in the info for a discussion.

RP used by drag racers...just post some juicy url's of forum where it's discussed in depth. I'm sure you'll find some interest here by someone to join in.
 
I'm not out to pick any fights. I'm just pointing out that oil performance at lower temperatures is also important.

The drag racing point was seperate from the cold engine startup. Some say extreme pressure performance is not required with engine oil. I was just pointing out that may not -always- be the case. Drag racing really pushes the envelope with valvetrains, and extreme pressure is part of the game.

RP is indeed very popular in drag racing. I was just wondering what made it so special...

The test is bogus. The Timken machine was made to test grease and gear oil, nothing more. You only see the use of the Timken machine when someone want to sell 'snake oil'.
Dandruff shampoos will do better than motor oil in that machine.
 
Don't beleive any motor oil "test" done down here, particularly by a car mag.

They simply don't have the bucks to do a truly decent comparison. The "other" one was half OK, but they were doing power runs with a used oil analysis after a dyno pull (can't remember how long).

No mention of a control oil between pulls, used oil analysis of the control oil tests etc.

The timken test is completely relevant to that part of your engine where a cylindrical surface is in contact with a toroidal surface, under boundary lube conditions... similarly, the Lucas oil stabiliser gear sets are only demonstrating usefulness in that part of your engine with low speed straight cut gears.

..and if you understood what is meant by "startup" ..you'd know that it's the first 20 minutes of operation (more or less). It's a common term in the engineering circles (SAE for one) as anything other than "steady state".

Naturally, our marketing arms of the oil companies capitalize on this loophole in nomenclature. This doesn't necessarily discount the (mis)concept you're referring to ..but that's more of a viscosity issue in extremes and has a bundle of its own (too many) variables to be a "tenet" in itself. You could run kerosene for the first few seconds (actually- if not under load- you can do it for quite a while).
