I fixed a couple of leaky transmission fluid hoses on my 1999 A4 Quattro.

Where/how do you add trans fluid?

Thanks

sorry i dont know the answer but i have looked for answers to questions like that on vwvortex.com

they have an audi area and i know they talk about the tiptronic transmission

If you have the same transmission as my Passat, the ZF five-speed auto with the "lifetime" fluid, it is awkward. There is probably an Audi forum somewhere with the steps spelled out.

MT or auto? Not to sound like a smartarse, but the transmission fluid is added through the inspection/filler hole. You will need to get the car off the ground and level.

For the MT you need one or both of these sockets:

One's for the fill plug, the other one is for the drain plug. You can buy them online.

1. Make sure your transmission is not boiling hot, but warm. Remove the inspection/filler plug, which is on the side of the transmission housing. Stick your finger in the hole and get it wet (!!!). The fluid level is right when the fluid reaches the bottom of the hole. I apologize...

2. Since you have bothered getting this far, you should drain the fluid. The drain plug is obviously at the bottom of the transmission. Ideally you place a pan under the general drainage area.

3. After all the smelly mess has drained, install the drain plugs and then fill the transmission with fresh fluid. Don't do it the other way around.

I suggest you use Red MT-90, which is an appropriate GL4 fluid. If you drive in a predominantely cold climate Red Line MTL may be a better choice. CHECK YOUR MANUAL TO VERIFY THE CORRECT FLUID AND THE REQUIRED VOLUME!
Filling is done with a transfer pump. You can buy a cheap piece of junk at your FLPAS and throw it out, or you can use a better pump. Better tools result usually in less frustration. Make sure the transmission is properly filled. If fluid starts coming out of the fill hole (!!!), then you're good. Install the fill plug.

Now you should probably change the fluid in the rear differential, which is usually in worse shape than the transmission fluid. Expect to see some metal "glitter." The draining and filling procedure is the same as with the transmission fluid. Do not drain the fluid before removing the fill plug! The proper fluid is a GL5 75W-90 fluid, which Red Line makes. CHECK YOUR MANUAL TO VERIFY THE CORRECT FLUID AND THE REQUIRED VOLUME!

After a test drive, check for leaks. You may want to check the fluid level(s) again to be sure.

If your A4 has a slushbox, which I assume it does since you mentioned leaky transmission fluid hoses and MT's don't have those, take it to the dealer who has the proper machine for changing the auto transmission fluid. And weep when you pay.

audiworld.com would be a good source for info on an Audi.
