Picked up a six speed Audi allroad quattro with the 2.7T (biturbo) over the weekend.

Doing an Auto-RX treatment now (Havoline dino 5W30 with a Mann filter) to be followed by a dino rinse.

What do you guys recommend for oil. I'm thinking GC 0W30 or M1 0W40. I want a Group IV/V synthetic that is easily obtainable over the counter.

Thanks.

Both of your choices meet the VWoA/AoA 502.00 oil specs. By all means....go for it.

Funny thing is that Audi recommends 0w30 with 5w30 being an acceptable substitute as long as the oil mees ACEA A3 spec.

What is weird is that neither M1 0w30 nor 5w30 meet A3 and this is what most people seem to use in this vehicle.

What's weird is that people use these oils in those engines anyway. That these oils don't meet A3 is not strange but evident, given their specs.

This is the kind of bad advice that got VWoA in trouble with the 1.8T engine. Audi is probably specifying an almost 20-weight oil to help boost the Allroad's dismal gas mileage and avoid the guzzler tax. To make the engine last longer, I vote for Mobil 1 0W-40 or anything else that actually meets A3.

I've seen one 2.7tt engine burn-out on Mobil 1 5w30 and suspect it could be commonplace. Mobil 1 5w-40 SUV or Shell Rotella T Synth HDEOs would my my first choice to clean up from the previous owner, then attempt extended ocis with an approved long-life oil. Since you are wisely choosing ARX, that might not be totally necessary. Also, for ARXing I would recommend the Shell RTS, maybe thinned-down with Mobil Drive Clean 5w30, GF-4. (Both Gruppe III base and fine for ARX compatibility)

Just curious... where do you get your SLX?

ssmokin,

I call German Castrol "SLX" because that is what I believe it is, so if that threw you off, sorry. In case you are asking where do you get GC/SLX because you are not familiar with it, at Autozone.

pscholte,

Yes you through me off. I thought you were using the SLX branded stuff. I've got a four or five cases of GC in my basement.

Is the 0w30 that the BMW dealer parts counter stocks the SLX? I wonder what they get per quart for that stuff? Too much I'm sure.

No, BMW does not have a 0-30 (unless your local dealer is different and is stocking the German-procured Syntec 0-30). They have a 5-30 that's made by Castrol specific for BMW. Wonder why they never simply used the 0-30 in the first place? Weird.

I also find it strange that a lot of people are running inferior oils (non-A3, non-recommended grades) for their auto-rx runs, just because they're supposed to use a non-synth.

I don't think not running an recommended oil (a3 or otherwise) will really matter for 1500 miles. I didn't add AutoRX to my existing oil as recommended I changed the oil and filter and added the Auto RX to it. I'm not concerned for 1500 miles use any good oil.
