We checked out the A3 before we bought our rabbit. Sure, it was fancy, but it wasn't necessarily nicer. Dash materials appeared cheaper looking than the vw. I kind of don't get the premium compact segment... When you live in a place where tiny cars are the norm, maybe it is sensible. However, the price needs to be pretty darn low to justify not moving a segment up.

I didn't read too closely, but I'm assuming the a1/s1 can be had in awd while the polo and other little VWs aren't. That would be a differentiator. But most of these cars ( like, say, the Acura ilx)? No thanks. For a few bucks more you can get a far better, more substantial car, and for a lot less money, you can get almost the exact same car.

I agree. The Encore and Verano make sense, especially if you watch the options. $30k base for an A1? I wouldn't consider one.

I really wanted the A1 Clubsport Quattro, but they never ended up building it. The powerplant was the TT-RS turbocharged 2.5L I-5. 0-60 was quoted at 3.7s!

Specs are attractive, price is not. Too bad Subie got rid of the hatch WRX. I think the Mazda MS3 is a better bang for the buck hatch. The Audi is a sharp looking car though.

It looks to me that if you went that fast in that thing in other than a straight line it would roll like those marbles in the synthetic oil.

Can I order one without the badges for 10K less?

It's not the Golf platform. It's the PQ25 platform, which includes the Polo (smaller than the Golf).

Yeah, I wiki'd it too but saying 'Polo' wouldn't have had as broad an effect on the site's demographic.

Audi has evolved into VAGs luxury line, I don't know what an A1 could offer from a mechanical perspective, over a Polo/R that isn't just content related. It's like the A3, Golf,N.American Rabbit how many different badges are we going to have? The early-years GMifying of the VAG

Pretty much, its all about offering a great lease price to the 20 something college grad so they can have the proper badge on the grill, who just can't quite afford an A4.

VW's don't look as shiny in the hedge fund parking lot next to the other guys GT3.

VW is heading down a path GM once did and it will bite them sooner or later.

Yes, THAT would have been one hot little rally blaster.
