My daughter has "inherited" a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage with a 1.5L A/T. It has 113,000 mi. The fluid looks and smells good. The spin-on filter however looks like the original. Is she asking for trouble if we completely exchange all the fluid? Is there a good alternative to the Mitsu Red? I would also change the filter in the pan.

I'd start by doing some mini changes, and maybe change the spin-on. Then driver a bit, keep swapping out some fluid, then eventually change out the pan, filter, etc.
For ATs that havent been serviced properly, slower is better.

Dextron/Mercon III will work for that transmission . I would say that any decent quality fluid would be fine. A step up would be maxlife semi-synthetic. 2 steps up are full synthetics like m-1 and 3 steps up are amsoil and redline or schafers. your pick.
While most people take on the mentality of "if it isn't broken, why fix it" mentality; my take (when dealing with cars with unknown service history) is to service all the fluids for once, incl. pwr steering fluid, brake fluid, ATF (for A/T) or MT gear oil, engine oil, coolant, etc.
Knowing that ATF fluid is a wear-n-tear item, I would change it out w/o hesitation.
