At ~40K, I need to do the first fluid change on auto trans. fluid on my Frontier, but am wondering if I should stick with plain Dextron III. Or, I've been reading a lot of people on here mention +3, +4, etc., but I still don't really understand what they are. And I'm wondering if I should just use one of them if they cost about the same.

I've thought about M1 in the past, but it's almost $6/qt. and at this point I plan to sell the truck in the near future (I do want to go ahead and change it). Also I hope to do a full drain & refill which is quite a bit. I do use M1 motor oil.

Since you're planning to sell the truck, go with any Dexron III fluid. Nissan says Dexron III may be used in place of Nissan Matic D, or at least it is stated in my wife's 2004 Sentra owners manual.

Do verify that first though.

I used Penzoil DEXIII in my parents Quest. 10$ a gallon. Shifts fine, probably should drain/fill it again tho.

I used advance auto's merc/dexIII universal ATF on my 2001 nissan sentra without issue. Matic-D is probably better equipped for extended drains over a regular dexIII.

Is Supertech DexIII as good as any DexIII?

BTW, the ST +4 is only about $1 more/qt.

If you'll show the service records to possible buyers
to show the m1 oil and good maintenace -you may still want to use m1 ATF rather than muddy your service records.

That's what I was thinking originally. Not sure if it would be worth it though.

May as well go with M1 ATF if you plan to leave it in long term. I'd hate to waste M1 on a regular drain/fill regimine.

You can find Matic-D online for about $3.00 a quart. I don't know how many quarts the Frontier takes. I do a fill, refill three times every 15K with my Sentra.

I don't know if it's better then the run of the mill Dextron III. It is made for Nissan trannies though. Do a search on here. You will find some info on Matic-D.
