They don't seem to move much or at all so didn't think they would be yellow jackets, and they don't look like wasps. And no way I'm opening that door until well after the first hard freeze.

Looks like some kind of wasp. If it’s cold there they might be lethargic. If that’s the case you’ll likely be fine to open the door. They’re slowing down or disappearing for the winter in Missouri as we drop into the mid to low 40s at night now.

Aren't they always in the ground or close to it? And flying around.
yellow jackets will nest just about anywhere ! when the weather cools they get slow and gather at nesting sites ,and yes when warm they fly around looking for anything sweet

They’re yellow jackets. They aren’t moving because they are standing their ground.

You can test this by smacking a stick where they are all chilling. I’m guessing they’ll move like you envisioned after that.

Report back.

I find that ortho wasp killer, in the green can, works good at killing ‘em. Other wasp killer sprays, not so much.

I’d spray and run. Come back after a few.

Why is man always killing animals that "inconvenience" him? He must be a pretty terrible animal indeed. A destroyer of worlds.

Now, that car door ... looks like quite a junker.
I don't think I would open that door.

Wife is allergic to stings and has one of those epipens around during summer months. So any nest on the side of the house goes, and in short order. I think she is ok with them near her garden, as they do kill pests, but even then, it’s a bit of a worried relationship.

I usually don‘t like killing ‘em but I took special delight one time after getting stung from stepping on an in-ground nest… zero tears shed getting rid of that problem! (plus it was in yard, had little kids around, etc).

Get a can of foaming type wasp spray and go out at first light and spray it into the gap. All of those critters will be in the nest and lethargic. Probably should wear gloves and glasses, etc.

The in ground nests are easy to get rid of, first thing in the morning just dump a 5 gallon bucket of hot-hot soapy water in the nest.

Wasps, Hornets, and Yellow Jackets are not animals. They are insects sent to earth by satan himself. Honey bees and those big ol’ fluffy bumblers 🐝 are cool… as long as you leave them alone. Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are just jerks.

I buy this stuff by the case. It works well.
