A little over a year ago I bought a new car for my wife and it has a 24 valve V6 engine. I drive it now and then and I noticed that on cold startup, it has some valve train noise until the oil starts to circulate. After searching this website I decided to switch from the OEM Mopar filter to Motorcraft. I drove it after the oil/filter change and the cold start-up noise was gone. Well, it's been 2000 miles since the oil/filter change and I drive the car again the other day and the noise is back. Does the Motorcraft filter not have a good bypass valve? I'm willing to spend more money on a filter. I think I need one with the best bypass valve I can get. Any suggestions?

If it was me, I'd put another Motorcraft filter on now, just to see what's going on. Like does the noise disappear?
Also noise could be result of failure of anti drain back valve, and not necessarily the by-pass valve. How's the pressure gauge look at and soon after starting?

Are you 100% sure that:
a) it is the by-pass valve
b) the Mopar OEM and Ford filter are the same BP pressure?
c) it isn't the oil
d) ADBV?

Is this the Chrysler 3.0L V-6? That's what I have. It's made by Mitsubishi, by the way. Sounds like a possible anti-drainback valve issue, as others have already pointed out. Silicone ADBV's are orange in color and are more durable than nitrile (black), so look through the base plate of any filter you buy for orange. I'd experiment with different brands of filters until you find one that doesn't give you problems, assuming this may be the cause. Purolator PureOnes, Mobil 1's, and Wix/Napa Gold/Carquest Premium Blue (all three of the latter are the same) use silicone ADBVs. I'm also assuming you're using the correct weight oil called for by your owner's manual.
Thanks for the replies. I guess the subject of my post should have been about the anti drain back valve because it makes sense that the ADBV would prevent all the oil from returning to the sump. (The truth is that until I started seaching this forum all I knew about oil filters was that they let the oil and various sized particles into the filter and the big pieces stay inside) Anyway, I'll try one of the brands you guys recommended and I'll look for one with an orange ADBV. BTW, I am using Mobil 1 oil (and it is the proper weight) and I have the 3.5L Magnum engine (Dodge Intrepid R/T).
