Today, I bought a new green Stanley "Classic" vacuum bottle. The 1 quart size, to carry coffee to work in.

Yep, it's green, has the screw-on cup, traditional shape, "lifetime warranty" and the label boasts "Since 1913".

Turn it over and look at the bottom. Made in China. (*sigh*)

So much for that warm feeling.

Here's my question. Yes, I bought it at Wal-Mart. Is there an American made version anymore... that I would find somewhere else?

Makes me glad I still have and use my grandfathers STANLEY thermos, even though its nicked up and the steel cap is dented some. My father has his still and loves it just as much as I do.

Reminds me of about a decade ago when Stanley was proudly touting on TV commercials about "New Britian Connecticut".....must have been a begging for sales,and they just couldnt justify it anymore and gave in to the Communist persuasion.

Another example of shameless marketing. Suprisingly more consumers than they think pay attention to deception like this. Seems like fraud to me.

Stanley made a stir a few years ago when they planned to reincorporate in Bermuda to [legally] get out of paying US taxes.

I think the plan was scrapped after the bad publicity.

But I bet it looks IDENTICAL in everyway to the original QUALITY made USA product....

Problem is that it does "PERFORM" like the USA made product.

Get all sorts of nice stuff from China.

We bought an XRF at work a few years ago, and the salesman told us that many importers are using it to pick up lead in painted stuff...checked my work supplied commemorative mug, and lead was in the glaze (admittedly, most of the stuff in glazes isn't picked up, so the actual ppm is unknown.)

We had some asbestos stripped in 2010 (lots), and what keeps the contractor busy between major projects is taking the asbestos gaskets out of chinese made bike, quads, small engines...my homelite trimmer exhaust gasket was asbestos, decades after it was illegal to sell...so was FIL's Ryobi 'though.

I rented a handheld XRF at work. I used it to detect absence of nickel plating on stainless circular aerospace connector shells. Amphenol the connector supplier, had an oops at their facility. I spent the next night at the engine manufacturers lot climbing on CF34's checking FADEC connectors. I wanted to keep it (buy it) but it was costly and got vetoed. That tool was awesome.

I call these items "legal counterfeits". The only difference between the legal couterfeits and the illegal ones is whether or not Stanley gets their cut.

I got an orginal Stanley replaced that no longer keep coffee hot plus it was rusty on the inside, yes Stainless Steel can rust. The replacement was made in china. I've had it for over a year now and it does keep coffee steaming hot overnight.

Regarding the post implying its Wal-Marts doing as far as being made in china, a little more research would tell its a product of Stanley owned by PMI. Who is PMI? Why non other than Phillip Morris Inc.

No more counterfeit than all our computors, televisions, cell phones, shoes, ect.

Hey, if you don't like chinese made goods don't buy them, this logic is not rocket science.

So let me get this straight. You went to Walmart to buy the Stanley vacuum bottle, took it home and found out it was made in China?

And this is Walmart's fault that Stanley decided to outsource the manufacture of the bottle to China?

And you're not sure if any similar Stanley bottles are still being made in the USA, and it's just Walmart that's selling said bottle made in China?

My suggestion would be to return said bottle to Walmart, and look for a bottle made in the USA. But, before you do so perhaps a call to Stanley to see if such a bottle now exists, would be a good idea. Beyond that, checking the label first or not shopping at Walmart at all in future, might be the answer.

I think a lot of consumers today still equate China with electronics junk and not as much with other durable goods because unlike electronics which all began coming from China about 15 years ago, many other non electronic durable goods were being made in the USA up to the past five years or so.

Being a vet you must know that the biggest threat to the USA from an enemy is China .A SIGNIFICANT amount of the profits from those goods you buy from them goes into the chinese military. No one else comes close to being a threat, especially those guys living in the caves over in Afghanistan or Iran which HAS NEVER in its history ever started a war, they have only reacted to being attacked first.

There are many different grades of stainless. Some are rather difficult to corrode.

I looked at a "stainless" Wolfgang Puck cookware set that my friends bought from a QVC-type of network. It developed black spots on the inside that would reappear with the same pattern, no matter how much they were scrubbed. After examining it in the lab I realized the cookware was plain carbon steel with chrome plating. The plating (usually brittle by nature) was flaking off, and was cathodic to the base steel, causing it to corrode. In addition, the rivets for the handle were wasting away from corrosion. The only thing stainless in the set was the thin cladding on the pan bottom. Yes, it was made in china.
