Manuals for two different pieces of gas powered OPE state the following:
OPE 1: Use oil marked: API service "SF" - "SJ"
OPE 2: Use oil classified "For service SF, SG, SH."

To complicate matters, oil containers often list multiple API classifications. For example, two different oil bottles are marked as follows:
Oil 1: Meets or exceeds API classification SE, SF and SG/CD.
Oil 2: API SERVICE SH,SG/CC,CD

Which of the following statements (perhaps several) is the manual for OPE 1 actually indicating?

The selected oil's label...
  1. should include SJ.
  2. should include SF.
  3. should include no classification prior to SF.
  4. should include no classification subsequent to SJ.
  5. should include at least one of the following four classifications: SF, SG, SH, SJ.
What is the manual for OPE 2 indicating? Is it acceptable to use either oil in either OPE? Is it acceptable to use current (SP) oil?

Typically, manual writers using that language would mean option:

3. should include no classification prior to SF;

or possibly,

5. should include at least one of the following four classifications: SF, SG, SH, SJ.

In that case, Oil 1 is not acceptable for OPE 1. Oil 1 has SF on the label, but the label includes SE as well:
"Oil 1: Meets or exceeds API classification SE, SF and SG/CD."

Not really though since it doesn't stop there. I guess "include" might not be the right word, but "be limited to" might be better.

If the oil's highest classification exceeds the equipment's minimum requirement, it should be suitable.

I will throw even more confusion towards you :D

Chew that 🤪
.

API: CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF. SL; ACEA: E7, E5, E3; Global: DHD-1; Caterpillar: ECF-2, ECF-1-A; Cummins: CES 20078, 77, 76 ,75, 72 ,71; DDC: 93K215; Deutz: DQC III-10; IVECO: T1 (Meets requirements);JASO: DH-1; Mack EO-M+, EO-M; MAN: M3275-1; MB-Approval 228.3; MTU: Category 2; Renault Trucks: RLD-2; Volvo: VDS-3;

All these standards are "acceptable" too!

Seems like a reasonable guideline. I'm considering mixing this remaining pint of SH,SG QS Super Blend ("Oil 2" above) with some current QSAD for use in OPE. The bottle was opened in the mid-90s, but has been tightly capped. Not too concerned about using "old" oil, although perhaps not the optimal solution.
