anyone work with pyrometers?

so how do you know how to tune with a pyrometer? I mean, is there a specific temp to target? with many variations,i don't get how this is easily done
 
As a rule of thumb I try to keep my pre turbo EGT no higher than 1350* for short intervals and I usually only see those temps when I have the fuel and timing turned up fairly high. I have seen 1500* EGT's intermittently at the drag strip running a full race tune.
Also I wait until I see a temp of around 300* before I shutdown.

I don't use it as a tuning device per say, rather a warning device. I have made my best power at around 1150* though?

but if i were to use a w/b meter, i wouldn't need this then,right?
