I saw this commercial where it was saying that you can have local and long distance for 39.00 the first year and 19.00 for every year after that.

I saw the same thing, but I'm a little skeptical

I have had it for over a year. It's not the most reliable system but it does work. My computer is a bit out dated and internet connection is not nearly as fast as it should be. I have had calls drop on a rare occasion, and at times I can hear my voice in the phone which can be annoying. These problems however, may be due to my computer and connect speed. The other con is that every time you boot up your computer, it takes a minute or two to boot up the MagicJack software. For the price, I have been satisfied. I have had less trouble with the magicjack than I did when I had Vontage, a lot less.

so it's a voip service????? And all this time i thought it was regular phone service. Do they give you a special phone to use and does the other person need one too?

It's VOIP but has a regular phone jack for your regular phone. You get a number anyone can dial. Hence the magic.

Online reviews note that you cannot call 800 tech support, and have to go on a horrid online chat session with India. Other grouchy types note you can't always get a local area code, so your neighbor has to make a toll call to call you... less relevant in this era of most having cellphones with free long distance.

I have it in Canada, and my brother is at MIT. I have a Boston number and he can call us local on it. Plus I use it to make outgoing calls to everywhere in Canada/US Works very reliable for us. Works better on Cable internet than DSL.

Guys.

Skype is cheaper, and is probably a bit more reliable.

I'm sure magicjack is OK, but you never know with a fly by night VOIP service.

I've had skype for years, and it has always delivered better sounding phone calls than my sprint cell phone, or a home phone ever could.

It works better on my 10mbps cable than DSL at my fathers house, but it still works good at both places.

Skype costs less than $60.00 a year? If thats the case, then you may want to check into that. I had no trouble getting my local area code, but then I live in metro Atlanta. Anyone with any phone can call you, even the bill collectors.

The MJ to MJ calls overseas are free.

I paid 19 dollars for a year of skypeout service, now they charge more.

The skypein service costs about 30 per year.

So about 60 sounds right for your own number, unlimited calling IN and OUT.

You can buy a USB phone for very cheap on the internet, I have one on my desk, works just like a regular phone. I think the plastic usb phone I use cost 9 dollars at walmart.

I have been on Vonage for years, $31/mo with tax. Less if you pay a year in advance. Ethernet in to the ATA and regular phone out. Unlimited calls to all of the USA, Canada, and most of Europe. Using the same phones as always.

what about calls south of the border? do i get the service, the phone and what about the other person's phone you call? Is it free for them to receive?

MJ is magic jack..

The calls from Skype to skype are always free, no matter where you call.

THey only charge when you are calling a regular phone (skypeout), or a regular phone is calling you (skypein)

so what's the cost for the cheapest service, inexpensive phones to call to just one place? I don't plan on using a service to call more than 1 person. All this is still very new to me and i don't even know what questions to ask.

The cheapest way to do it would be free.

If you are calling another skype user at their computer, then it is totally free, unlimited calling.

If you want to call one person, but not receive calls, then purchase the skypeout plan (very cheap, I think 20 per year), and you can call a regular telephone from your skype phone.

If they have caller ID it will come up with jumbled letters because you do not have a callback number.

$2.95/month for unlimited calling to US and Canada, or 2.4/cents a minute if you do a pay ahead.

If you want you own number so people can call you from a regular phone, you can get a 1 year package for $60. That gets you your own phone number.

IIRC, you can use your cell phone number for your caller ID on the $2.95/month service.

what i mainly want it for is to call to Mexico. Does someone here have Skype's number? I'm at a work comp.

This Mexico plan might be of interest to you...
http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/subscriptions/mexico/

On the standard US/Canada plan, Mexico varies from 2.4 to 9.9 cents/minute. A few big cities are 2.4 cents/minute, the rest of the country is 9.9 cents/minute.

I don't see a phone number for Skype on their website. If you want to use their service from a regular phone or a cell phone, you need to get a special access number from them.
