Don't want to hijack the reman brake caliper thread but has anyone rebuilt PS pumps, like the common Saginaw pumps in GM vehicles? I installed a reman cardone pump and after trying to bleed the system it still whines and groans. I have the old one and bought a pump rebuilding kit so I was wondering if they can easily rebuilt?

Where would you get hard parts? IM Cardons rebuild parts are trouble. You may put on 3 or 4 pumps untill you get a good one. That's my experiance anyway.
It has been a while but if you can get a vane kit it should be no problem.
The parts are difficult to come by and you have no way of testing your work only to install it and hope for the best.
With PS pumps, A/C compressors i always go with used. The yard i use charges me 10 bucks for either and i get to choose which one i want.
Its an old school yard not a chain, just a geezer and his helpers, good people.
Never had a problem with A/C units that still had pressure in them or pumps that were clean and had a decent feel when turned by hand and clean looking fluid.
A 100 times better than this reman rubbish they stock today.

Did you flush the system before installing the pump? who knows what crud is in there.
I did not know GM PS pumps still had the whining problem after around 1999.
The original pump on my 96 Regal whined all the time and I replaced it with a rebuilt pump that whined just as bad. Finally found a good used pump out of a 98 Lumina LTZ that did not whine. The salvage yard said the 98 pump showed not to be interchangeable but it was an exact fit.
I believe the 98 pump had a weaker pressure spring than the original 96 pump.
When you rebuild your pump pay close attention to the Flow Control Spring and the Control Valve it pushes against. I am surprised some one does not make a rebuild kit with an optional pressure valve assembly.
If you are able to find a cure for your whining power steering pump please post it because I have found almost no information on this subject.

If you have some time they aren't terribly difficult to take apart and put back together. The hardest part of disassembly is prying the pump from the housing, and then compressing the back cover of the pump so you can remove the snap ring which secures it.
The real problem is that the bushing may be worn, and short of searching at specialized bushings and reamers (which I did, once upon a time), there is no way to fix that.

i know only one thing about PS pumps. do NOT use solvent or other thin fulids to flush it. only use oil ONLY.
If you want a good reman pump, go to the dealer and pay the higher price. What do you save when you have to install a cheap part twice?
Most of the generic reman pumps I end up with are painted carelessly, and half the paint is flaking off. I always ask this question: "If someone can't do as task as simple as painting, how can they do such complex tasks like precision machining?"

I put an A1 Cardone pump in my 97 suburban. It too is very noisy, after many hours flushing and bleeding I now just ignore the horrible whine. Driving through parking lots reminds me the whine is still there cause everybody stares at my vehicle. If anybody knows a cure please post it. I do not want to change the pump again, it was a moderate pain.
