I like to go to flea markets, thrift shops and garage sales. Occasionally I see an old oil filter and I have decided to start collecting them much to my wifes dismay. I paid .25 cents for this old target branded oil filter at a goodwill. I believe it is likely from the late 80s, the may be a date code on it but its smudged.

I want to cut it open, but I don't, not sure yet because if I ever win the lottery on of the cars i want in my collection is a 350 diesel gm product. Anyone else collect and or analyze old filters? Yes I really am that weird

I wouldn't cut it open. I got two old supertechs fullsize for fords sitting around from the 90's sometime. States that is has a synthetic filter media.

I always look at thrift stores and such for filters, but never have come across any, old or new.
If cheap enough, I would buy them if they were "vintage".

Yes you are weird, but are in good company here.

1. Really good find and post.
2. If I called you weird then it would be like the pot calling the kettle black.

Thanks.

yeah, you're weird

If I found an old oil filter for cheap, I'd buy it as a decoration or paper weight. I have an old snap on ratchet on my desk.

A vintage oil filter is like a vintage CO monitor. They were probably ok for their day, but I would not run them now. Collecting them is a...um... "unique" hobby.

Cool find. Noticed there is no ADBV, which makes sense for the vehicles it lists on the box. GM engines with base up mounting orientation didn't typically have an ADBV in those old days, but do now.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I forgot to submit the best picture, but here it is.

This filter features- Sealed end caps! Bonded Seams! I wish they still made target branded filters, Top quality for sure.

That's really interesting being a vintage 80's Target branded filter. We have a Target in my hometown. I guess it's an average sized store, however the automotive section is about the weakest of any discount retailer I've been in. I don't believe they even carry oil filters nowadays. Walmart on the other hand has a pretty decent automotive section.

Good post. My wife gives me grief because my closet is where I store my oil stash.

This is the only post i can find anywhere on the subject of collecting vintage and new oil filters so i guess you're the first and im the second to ever have any interest in doing so?????

Others have posted old filters before on this chat board. Since you just joined, you haven't looked far enough. ;)

I've posted this awhile back, but here goes: My mom found this cleaning out an old shelf in her house. It was probably intended to go on a '75 Buick that my dad used to own. The date on the box goes up to 1978, so it was probably made at that time or shortly after. Made by Champion Labs. Filters down to .000014 of an inch. (LOL, sure it did) Anyway, it's one I will never use or cut open.

I was wondering who made them for Target. Applications printing on box reminds me of what Lee oil filters used to look like. My second guess would be Champ Labs, who acquired Lee in 1983.

Looking at the pics, topic filter looks in really good shape. It must have been stored in a good environment.
