Darn socks! They have holes in them!
I guess I do darn them in my own way.
Then I throw them away and buy new ones.
But a hole has to be big enough for a toe to poke through before they're condemned to the trash can.

When I was a kid growing up in the '50s &'60s, my Mom would relax in the evening after dinner and mend sox and Dad's other work clothes that were much more expensive than they are today.

As for sox, I just buy a new bag of white sox(12/$6-$7 @ W*M) and use my old sox for OCI's. I do ware though them quickly so, I have lots of rags for OCI's.

I never heard the word "darn" used in that context before. I had to Google it. And no, I don't darn them. I wait until they significantly large holes in them, then they go in the rag pile.

I wouldn't say I darn them, but if a decent sock develops a hole I'll sew it closed.

Must be a slow day...

Should I save my old socks? What's your address?

It's a method of repairing holes in fabric. Using a needle and thread, you "create" or "weave" new fabric to mend the hole.

It's beyond my skill, hence I just sew the hold closed. This results in a pucker in the fabric, and a lesser quality repair.

By no means an expert, but My mother showed me how when I was about 8. Mum would break out the knitting needles and knit a new heel or toe. This is on the heavy wool boot socks, that I wore at the shipyard. My current boot socks are Thinsulate, 3 pieces stitched togetther. Git 'em from LL Bean The stitching lets go , so I fix them . I normally wear cotton socks now- a-days. I buy them by the 6 pack and dispose of worn socks as they appear.

LL Bean would probably replace them. Just call them up and pay shipping.

Of course, for socks, it may not be worth the price or hassle.

The socks are 15 yrs old. When they get real thin , I'm gonna use them for a pattern. I have never seen a sock made of cloth. Just knit. Thinsulate is as good as wool, and lighter when wet.

Would have thrown these bamboo socks out 12 months ago otherwise.
