I was originally completely against this but someone has somewhat managed to talk me into replacing the transmission in my 13 year old Buick. My aunts husband's brother will be doing the install. He's a retired master Chrysler tech.

I'm not willing to pay jasper prices but I see I can get one from autozone with a 3 year warranty for $1500 after core charge.

I'm just wary of autozone brand stuff.

Anyone familiar?

Is your aunts husband's brother willing to pull it out if needed for a second or third replacement?
I don't know about there transmissions but rebult alternators starters ect sometimes go back in less than a year.
I once went thru 3 power steering pumps in 6 months. One was bad at the time of install

I recommend pulling it out and taking it to a local transmission shop to rebuild. If you time it right with an appointment you can get it back in a few days. The problem with remanned transmissions is you don't know how long it's been setting on a shelf. The seals and other rubber/plastic parts start to crack over time when not being used.

I know that in the past AutoZone had junk remains. Lately they seem to be much better. Now Napa sells garbage. No shops will touch a napa rebuilt part.

Reading reviews of the outfit that makes the transmissions shows how absolute crap they care. They can't seem to build an engine to save their lives either.

Verdict is in from the shop. Failed clutch or hydraulics. So I'm assuming the cat sitting for 3 years either ruined the fluid or the seals.

Waiting on an estimate for a reman install right now. At least if I let them find me a reman transmission it should be warrantied.

your lucky its NOT a CVT $$$ i stick with manuals, usually just a clutch job + i DO change drivetrain lubes!!! GOOD LUCK!!

We had to get one from them when they were the only one who could get the specific 4R100 we needed, the Ford one was backordered with no ETA. Put it in maybe 3 or so years ago and haven't heard back from the customer.

That all being said, not my first choice, but it was a last resort kind of thing.

I don't understand the part about the "cat" but sitting for three years is not going to ruin transmission fluid or seals. Both are affected by high temps (oxidation for the fluid, heat aging for the seals), which isn't happening when it's sitting.

I meant car.

Well something happening because I just got it back on the road 6 days before the transmission failure and it worked fine up until I topped off the fluid. Then I experienced a brief burning smell a few times and then sudden transmission failure. It's worth noting the transmission wouldn't let me fully fill it because it kept leaking back out about half a quart from the full line.

Well ****. I just realized the transmission fluid I topped off with was Dex III and not Dex VI. Hopefully that 8/10th of a quart didn't destroy my transmission.

EDIT: everything I can find online shows Dex 3 and 6 are compatible with one another. Just makes no sense as to how the transmission would burn up in less than a week after getting it back on the road.

A Hail Mary would be to drop the pan and change the filter IIRC this one has a filter not just a rock catcher. What could have happened over that time is all the junk fell out of the fluid and when you got it running it got sucked up and may be blocking the filter. Just a half ass theory but not much to loose doing it.
I've not no forward gears and and reverse still works which is pretty tell tale of transmission failure. Don't think dumping $100+ on 2 gallons of Dex VI and a Filter are going to fix this issue.

I did a like action as Trav mentioned on a 2002 Bonneville SSEi, along with putting in a shift kit. That trans went on to give three more years of service. We ended up giving the car to a local high school student. We saw it around town.

Might be worth a shot....

It could be but I'm guessing not. The problems started after I added the 8/10th a quart of fluid to the transmission. It wouldn't fill past the MIN line on the dipstick without leaking back out of the transmission through either the dipstick grommet or vent tube. Then the brief burning smells started every few days and then sudden transmission failure. First a big jump in RPMs between the 1-2 shift and then no foward gears when giving it gas. If I tried to give it gas the RPMS shot way up and I ended up with a burning smell.

The transmission is toast.

After the shop diagnosed it they said despite me adding fluid to the transmission a few days prior that the level was 1qt low.

IMO it’s a roll of the dice. May be fine may have a problem that needs to be replaced again

Heck with mopar remans I have the roll the dice thing too. 10% have a problem. I think AER is doing some of ours
