I love it when they come to the yards of some octogenarians and are willing to give the guy money for some rusted, buried piece of keerap. The old guy then refuses to sell it.

In a few years, when the old guy dies, all this stuff will be hauled away as garbage. But, like most of us, the old boys think they'll live forever.

I catch it when I can. Really surprised that there are that many places that still store that much "junk." I also have wondered when they put on the screen what they bought and how much they sold it for, exactly whom bought that stuff?

It's one of my favorite shows. When the wife watches, I'll say: "See, Honey, I'm not that bad." Sure is a lot of stuff out there. I kind of sympathize with the old guys that won't sell. They spent their whole life collecting that junk, it's theirs, it represents what their life is about. Wife wanted to know if either of the 2 guys are married since they spend so much time on the road. They seem like nice guys, but I'd have reservations about letting somebody dig through all my [censored]--I'd rather they do it after I'm buried.

I know if I had as much stuff as some of those people I would be cashing in big time.....

I guess some of the guys that are ornery might become a little nicer once they figure out they will be on TV.

What surprises me is that there are people that will pay good money for rusty old junk.
I'm sure these two are closer to 'con men' when the cameras are off; selling junk to 'collectors' is a shifty business anyway.
Just my opinion.

dwendt44 - I agree with you. Who has the discretionary income or means to collect some of the junk that is so highly valued?
I mean, much of it has no intrinsic value like being a precious metal .
And it's not about recycling, either!

I've tried several times and just can't get into this show. To me, it's just 2 guys throwing money at people to buy their "stuff". I'd like to know if these guys have a "store" where they sell this stuff. Do they have orders they are trying to fill by buying this stuff? Who buys the stuff they buy? I want more details. At times it seems even they don't know the value of what they are buying....they just offer money seemingly random amounts. I saw one episode where they offered and paid an old woman $30 for an old brown jug whereas I would have offered maybe a couple of dollars. Give me a wad of cash and I can go buy other people JUNK too!

I like the show...then my girlfriend found out about it.
Now, she loves it!

There are a ton of places down my way they could film. Seriously.
But I hope they don't, as I think some of these treasures are best kept rather than pawned off and sold to the highest bidder, often taking away the family/historical/sentimental value of items like these. I don't care to see every cool antique to be on the market!

I don't think you need to be sleazy to buy and sell like they do. They are basically buyers and salesmen. Nothing wrong with that. Everybody sells something. If you go to work everyday you are selling your labor/knowledge.

I am not shocked people will pay them good money for stuff. I mean how much of this old stuff do you see around anymore? It's disappearing/rusting away every year that goes by.

I also enjoy the show. Some of those old fellas that won't sell anything look like they are on their last dollar.

History Channel's American Pickers is an interesting show but it lacks the educational value required to pull me in front of a TV.

Like they say, you can't take it with you.....may as well sell some junk and go on vacation or buy something fun.

I usually watch some of these shows while surfing online....

Keep watching, they actually explain a lot of the things they find and how they work and what they did. I actually found it to be quit educational.
