Anybody spare some bailing wire or a wire hanger?

Spotted Sparky the Cabrio this morning on the JFX. Just as we pulled away from the light at Fayette Street, I noticed the black Cabrio in front of me looked like ah, shall we say... attempting to excrete its muffler. But only succeeded in producing a nice shower of sparks. I quickly overtook it on one of the three-lane sections but got this nice picture to share.

The driver seemed perfectly happy with the grinding, sparking and DONK noises caused by a criminally loose exhaust system. Maybe they couldn't hear it over their blootoof earpiece - I dunno.

Thanks, MD 'safety' inspection!

Where's Audi_Junkie? Here's another VW owner in denial that their VW could possibly have a problem...

That is pretty crazy though, I'm sure there is only one hanger left holding it on, they just need to stop and put the muffler in the trunk...

I might be wrong but it looks like a FOP plate (Fraternal Order of Police) along with FPD.

Anyway, my friends parents had a Cabrio for a while (you may recall a few threads on it) and the rear muffler was... Well, RIDICULOUSLY rusted out. There was hardly any muffler left. Well, pretty much the entire exhaust was rusted, but the other muffler was intact. It was barely hanging onto the car,and pieces of it came off in my hand when I touched it.

FPD is what I'm seeing too, which makes the condition even more egregious IMO. One would think a first responder would have their "stuff" straight.

Right, there's one more hanger holding it on via the rubber mount. No telling how badly rotted that one is, though...

Fraternal Order of Police MD State Lodge. Hopefully one of his buddies will pull him over and give him a hickory shampoo for endangering other motorists.

How old can that cabrio be?
Don't german cars use stainless steel exhausts by now?

Anyhow, I've done a lot of work for one of the auto manufacturers on stainless exhaust issues. I've found that even fairly new ss exhaust systems can crack in two from a phenomenon called "sensitization", where the welded areas can see intergranular corrosion that goes through the whole thickness of the part. I've seen it on a new Mustang with only 700 Florida miles.
