I gave it a try this year.. I made some ruts with my big tractor last spring that I wanted to get taken care of as well as just some uneven areas. Seemed to do okay, but it's my understanding you need to aerate too?

My neighbor let me borrow his roller and as far as I know they don't aerate their yard either. Meanwhile, they have one of the best looking yards I've ever seen. Their roller is heavy too. Only 48" wide, but filled with fine gravel.

I'll see how it looks in a few weeks.

We have the yard plugged every fall and it does seem to help. As far as the ruts can you mow in different directions. I know even with a push mower if you keep mowing the same it can cause a path. I mow four different directions, north/south, east/west, northeast/southwest and northwest/southeast.

The ruts were made with a ~4000 lb tractor when the ground was wet.

Typically I mow with a ~800lb rider. I try to do the different directions, but it's just N to S and E to W since it's not a zero turn.

I get a mud pit every spring but as it dries out I can just walk on the high spots and it all works out. Looks absolutely gorgeous in June, and I have to mow it every 4-5 days!

Used to many years ago when we had a JD garden tractor in the family with a ~48" heavy tow behind lawn roller. We never aerated or de-thatched. Just rolled it to take out the freeze/thaw lumps and bumps.

Way back I had a co-worker from the Pacific NW who thought lawn rolling was the funniest thing. Never heard of it. I assume it's a regional thing?

Also curious, the moles at our house are RIDICULOUS.

My dad made a roller out of an old steel 40-gallon water tank. Found the center on both ends, welded a pipe that he put through it at each end, then greased up another pipe he put inside it and made that the part to hook to the mower. Then he cut out a large hole, and filled it up with concrete. Worked great. I wish he would have kept it. I could really use it. Might make my own now that I think about it.
