My mom has a early 2000's Nissan Altima (4 cyl), with 196k on the clock. This has been a tremendous car and they take great care of it..

It has a bump between 1st and 2nd gears and it feels like maybe a transmission slip, just not sure. The bump doesnt happen at higher speeds.

The fluid level is good and good color as well and there are no codes being throw.

Anyone have any input or thoughts?

Thank you so much from West Texas!

Agree, but come up a notch - Chris trains the Guru's

Is it only when it is cold? Do the revs flare between 1st and 2nd or does it just shift hard. Has it always been that way?

Locate the "Dropping Resistor"....IIRC, It's near the Battery Tray.
Disconnect the resistor & check the resistance across it.....Spec is 11.2-12.8Ω

Using a voltmeter or a scantool.......Check the TPS output voltage for smooth linear sweep throughout it's entire range several times.
*Closed Throttle.....(.015-.085 vdc)
*Full Throttle...........(3.5-4.7 vdc)

Engine performance issues can affect transmission operation!! MAF sensor & the Air Intake Boot between the MAF & Throttle Body are things to check on a Nissan.
*And anything else that affects performance, State of tune, Misfires, Partially clogged catalyst, Low fuel pressure, Restricted fuel filter etc etc.

The Jatco 4EF04A isn't very particular of what ATF is used.....But I recommend a good Matic D/Dexron III replacement like Maxlife Dex/Merc, Mobil 1 Multi Vehicle, Castrol Transmax Dex/Merc to name a few.

If you can't find any mechanical/electrical issues outside the transmission......The next step is Pressure Testing with a mechanical pressure gauge.

Hm, six reply posts in and nobody has said "Maxlife and Lubeguard Red."

I'm going to go with the suggestion: Maxlife and Lubeguard Red.

Your right....Diagnostics is "like" so 10 years ago

JATCO transmission are bullet proof and they are very reliable.
1-2 shift bump could be one of the following

a) Transmission mount - very easy to replace (note the torque setting 50 ft/lb - if you over torque the bolts they get misaligned).
b) MAF - clean it or better off replace it.
c) Coolant flush - trust me for some reason my Maxima hot spots also resulted in bizzare behavior. Drain and fill radiator and that should suffice.
d) Check the tie rods - a loose rod can also transfer that behavior to the steering column

This would be the first time I've ever read "JATCO" and "Bullet Proof" in the same sentence. They used to not be so, with CVTs. Have they improved that much?

Non-CVTs they are on par with any other good transmission makers - what is the definition of goodness (to me is it makes it to 200K).
