Any tips/advice for selling a used car?

how about a consignment lot. I did this with my car recently, CarMax offered 6500 I sold it via CarLotz for 14,999 less 199 sign up fee and 599 when it sold. they do all the paperwork, list it on every conceivable site and car magazine and it was a smooth process. Worth the $800 to get it sold at a good price.

Yup. That's it. Unfortunately, people will not pay more for a car that you poured your hart and soul into when there are other lower priced cars out there that are almost as good in the eyes of a potential buyer. This approach may work with classics though.

Oh, I thought this forum was a place to ask questions and get members' feedback. Thanks [censored]!

Except for Brenden, I appreciate everyone's input. Many of you understand where I stand and selling a car that you've taken great care of tends to instill a bias and make you think it's worth more than it really might be. I may may an adjustment in my listing price, do some more research, and take a dose of patience. As I mentioned, I don't need to sell it. I'd rather keep driving it than to let it go for something I'm not happy/comfortable with. But if I can sell it, I can order something new.

I guess I was being too honest and real about it, sorry for voicing my opinion and giving my input when you asked for it. Either way you look at it I am right and your car is priced above other models in the area, other posters seem to agree on this.

Maybe next time tell us in your first post that you only want us to tell you positive things and blow smoke up your behind.

You're the exact kind of person I do not buy cars from, your less than 5 year old car is not worth more just because you took perfect care of it, most buyers don't give a rats behind your expenses put into the car. They will just look at the purchase price and see it is above the others and buy theirs altima instead.

Welcome to the expenses of owning a vehicle; good luck with your sale.

You can be honest without being a jerk. For example, FirstNissan, Quattro Pete, itguy08, and javacontour all provided a healthy dose of reality saying it was probably priced too high. That's why I made my initial post. That's what I appreciate from the members of this forum. Instead, you ask me why I'm asking. That's all I'm saying. Don't be a jerk.

Continued thanks to everyone else for their input. On my way home from work this evening I stopped and test drove (for the second time) the leading replacement candidate, and it gave me some added incentive to price it more appropriately.

You need to price a car that new below what the dealers are asking if you want to do a private party sale.

Most people will just go to a dealer and get their financing, warranty etc, so since you can't offer that you need to factor in a discount.

The best way to find the true value is light it off on ebay with a 10 day no reserve auction and see where it ends. If you make a good presentation with about a hundred high def pictures and a good description you will get the most you can get for it.

I don't know about sale tax in Michigan, other states have no sale tax on private sale only dealer sale has sale tax. If Michigan has no private sale tax then you can price your car close to dealer and emphasize the no sale tax benefit.

Have you had a dealer appraise it for trade? In some states you only pay sales tax on the difference between the purchase price of your new car and the trade, and sometimes once you factor that savings in it really isn't worth selling PP on a car worth so much.

Have you looked at similar vehicles to see what they are listed for to make sure you are competitive?

I have sold vehicles in this price range, and sometimes they sit for weeks. I used Edmunds to price it and have had great luck with CL. You have to keep reposting it every morning. One day you'll get a call and it will sell from someone who either offers you your asking price or will offer you $1,000 less. I always offer to meet in the middle/split the difference if it's a reasonable offer and the buyer usually agrees.

Don't even entertain lowballers.

Sales tax for private sale in Michigan is based on the honor system. If the car is over 10 years old, some people claim a low sales price, or even say it was bought "for parts". That makes private sales more attractive than dealer sales in Michigan.

What is the best way to do this? Simply create a new listing and delete the old one?

You have to change the listing a bit otherwise the system will detect you are "top posting" and keep you from posting it. I leave the old one up and usually I repost 1-2 times during the week, but always first thing Saturday and Sunday morning when people are off work and shopping. It takes a little patience and time. For a vehicle in that price range, it usually takes me 4-6 weeks to sell.

Your in a tough spot, most people dont have that kind of cash, and banks are reluctant to finance something private sale.

As mentioned lower the price and see if it draws more interest but I am guessing your issue is people will go to a dealer because they can get fiancing.

The couple that bought my Terrain had no problem financing it at their credit union. We met at the credit union for the transaction, the loan officer took a quick look at the vehicle, ran a Carfax, handed me a check and we were done!

That is you, your not like 99% of the clueless who barely qualify, they depend on the dealer or used car lot, that is all I am saying.

Anyone buying used cars private sale over 5K$ with cash has a lot of leverage. People have such louset credit scores today, and people dont save or budget for new/newer car purchase.

You have high "vehicular self esteem". This gets a lot of toyota and honda buyers.

Their "condition levels" say that only the top 3% of cars meet their highest level of greatness. Toyota/Honda sellers, more than most, believe that, sure, they're in that top 3%. This perpetuates the myth of high resale, b/c so many Toyo/Hondas are up for sale at such high prices. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

Now, here's the issue, Nissan isn't quite Toyota/Honda, so you'll have to wait for the right buyer. Worse, someone who wants perfection will just buy a new car. This boils down to your car will sell first if parked next to a lesser example, priced exactly the same.

And the ugly... reports are in about Altima floorboards rusting out in five years. exhibit A. If an altima buyer knows this, they're going to budget for it.

Thanks, I didn't know I was part of the 1%.

I buy and sell regularly.

1) I price the car at the minimum I'm willing to accept, and note that fact. No negotiation what-so-ever. The price is what I want for the car.

2) I clearly state the true vehicle condition. Especially if it's very clean. I'll put something like: I promise this car actually looks and feels brand new, unlike so many of the others used cars you've looked at. Mobil 1 since new.

3) I always price below the others in the same category.
