in my 2005 Audi 4.2 V8 automobile? It appears to be a diesel oil. Any harm in that? The warranty is up (50,000 miles) and the free oil changes every 10,000 miles are done. Might be a good thing as I think the dealer uses 0-40 M1. I think it breaks down too quickly in this engine as I had some startup noise issues prior to the last change. Timing chain is tensioned by hyd pressure, since the change, no more noise. Might have been a breakdown in viscosity. I was surfing this site this weekend and think I would like to use the 5-40 from Schaeffers or even wondering about the Shell Rotella T 5-40. What about going down to a 30 wt oil to pick up fuel mileage and power? Any 30 wt. recomendations that may go 10,000 miles to a change? Any help or sugestions appreciated!

I'm running it in my BMW gasser and it's purring right along.

The 9000 series carries both gas and diesel ratings (to include VW 505.01) so it shouldn't be any problem.

BTW, that's a sweet V-8 you're driving!

Thought about the Amsoil too. Really want to just pick something up locally and not have to order oil. Want what is best for the engine though. I know RI RS4 recommends an oil by Renewable Lubricants Inc. HD 5-40, and the spec is very similar to the Schaeffers 5-40. Used Schaeffers back in the mid 80's and know its good. Leaning this way but worried about a diesel oil in a gas engine. I know Schaeffers claims a VW 502 rating, but its not on Audis approved list which doesn't mean much I guess. Keep the comments coming guys.

Schaeffer's or the RTS would be great choices. Use with confidence...

OilGuy, when I click the link I get an error msg.

I am trying to research an oil to put into my car and get tied into knots. VW 502.00 is recommended spec. M1 0-40 has been used by dealer every 10,000 miles but now makes startup noise from hyd. cam chain tensioner bleed off after that oil has been in the car for a while, (2000 miles now I notice it). It is obviously shearing fast. I would want a thinner oil for MPG, but it sounds as though it needs a thicker oil for durability and the 502.00 VW spec. What to do?

I get an error too - guess I should have tried the link instead of just copying it from a live web page. Just type in Schaeffer.

I would use an oil that VW has validated and included on their approval list. If you are not happy with one, try another.

RI RS4 has a lot of quality relevant data on this topic. PM him and he will give you his honest opinion. As far as API/Non-API 502.00 goes you are outside of your warranty period so you really shouldn't feel as constrained by that issue.

RI RS4 likes the RLI brand. It must be ordered, is very pricey and I'm really not seeing too much info on it here at the site. I'm not opposed to Amsoil either I guess. It would appear the Schaeffers 5-40 is pretty heavy oil. Amsoil 5-40 is thinner, right with the M1 0-40. Why is it such a worry?
