The last time I took a Motorcraft apart I found a Purolator Premium Plus case with a Pure One filter element.

There's nothing wrong with that - Purolator filters seem to be well-made.

The Ford-spec FL-1A has a threaded-end bypass. The PureONE does not. This is the case for MANY Motorcraft filters. For some reason, Ford has a serious thing with threaded-end bypasses.

If Ford was really serious about the threaded-end bypass they should've put it on the filter mountlike GM so the bypass would always be at the threaded-end and at the right setting no matter the filter

Are you sure? When I spoke to a Purolator rep a few years ago, he told me Motorcraft filters are made on a separate line with Ford oversight. Of course, now that Puro is owned by the dreaded Germans

( ) that may have changed...

a friend of mine brings over her 84 Dodge RamVan, 360motor. Asks me to check the fluids before her trip to Oregon.
So I notice the oil is pretty bad, BUT she won't let me change it, as she knows it'll add an extra hour, so I simply tell her.. we'll compromise. I'll add 1 quart of synthetic oil, and change just the filter. 7minutes total time.
So all I had was a Motorcraft FL-1A.
She makes the trip and is back, no problems.
Her ex-husband who owned a shop takes her van so he could see if there's anything in it of interest to him. So he does an oil change, and yells at her for allowing me to put a Ford oil filter (AND) the wrong size on the van.
So she tells him he's an idiot and takes her van back.
tells me about it, and I simply said. You made it back in 1 piece, the engine was probably happier to get an extra half qt of oil it didn't know about, plus 1 qt of synthetic that did pretty much nothing. haha!
Her ex is an old school mechanic. he can't diagnose anything, but can hang parts like nobody's business.

Same goes for the Motorcraft FL-1998 for my Subaru. There is no Ford application (or any other make) for it, so I'm actually surprised they bother packaging it as a Motorcraft-branded filter. It's just a PremiumPLUS/Classic in a different box.

I found it interesting/odd that if I used Motorcraft on my Hemi & Ford 4.6 3V, they both took 820S. However, when I went to Wix/NG, the Hemi took a shorter filter (white) vs. the 4.6 (black).

Once you get into Motorcrafts that do not share a Ford application, you start to lose some of the benefits. Thread end bypasses and silicone ADBV's start to disappear.
