Just got off the phone with a buddy who is going through chemo due to cancer. Anti nauesa pills, (according to him) are 600 dollars a pill and insurance will only pay 300. There is no way he can afford this so he is trying to tough it out. I was wondering, does anyone know any natural or homemade remedies for nausea from chemo treatments. I have heard about putting an ice pack on your head during the treatment helps and also sucking on ice chips to stay hydrated. I've also read of ginger helping. Not interested in anything illegal, just wondering if anyone knows of anything that will help him through this. Thanks in advance - Glenn.

That's kind of a problem as the illegal thing you don't want is also the time-tested and proven natural remedy. If you can get past the issue of it being illegal and just need to know where to buy it, ask around in the local senior community or music shop.

Wow, $600 per pill???

That to me is criminal. Id love to know what specialty chemical is used in there. It may well be one of the most expensive substances known to man on a per gram basis.

Yep, I asked him a number of times, are you sure it's not for the whole bottle? He was just as insistent that it was a per pill price. Criminal is a good word for it, but I can think of a few more that would get censored here.

YonYon is right, Cannabanols (weed) work wonders for a lot of folks. I would definitely ask his Dr if there is some other alternative because at 600 a pill I would be getting nausea, vomiting and depression all in one.

Tell him to look into something called Zofran, or it's generic equivalent Ondansetron. My wife's been prescribed this a few times and it's not expensive at all.

And now my fine friends at BITOG you know who is really behind the Federal gov't being offically opposed (as in don't even bring it up) to medical marijuana. We'll Big Pharma along with Budweiser, Coors, Jack Daniels.......

It's easy to say "that's criminal" but maybe it's necessary? How much money did it cost to develop the drug? How much does the mfgr. need to make in total to recover that expense (plus a reasonable profit) before their patent expires and competition drives the price down?

If they can't make money they won't fund R&D. That argument may not mean much to your someone who is very sick right now and can't afford it, but ten years from now a lot of people who are also sick might be glad they can get a safe, effective, and legal drug to help them at a reasonable price. At least some people who have this problem right now might be happy it at least exists regardless of the price.

My first wife took an anti-nausea drug called Ativan. She took a dose of it just prior to chemo treatment and she had it at home for nausea as well. She said the pre-treatment dose cut down on the nausea a good bit, but I guess everyone is different. Ginger snaps, ginger ale, anything with ginger in it is good for nausea. A lot of charter boat captains keep ginger snaps on board for seasick passengers. Saltines will also help settle the stomach. The others' suggestions here on herbal remedies are good for nausea too.

This will help. Loprazalam or Adivan will help as well.

Double wow! I can't imagine what complex of chemicals would cost that much. Of course, R&D and Patenting to protect the formulation does raise costs.

GreecGuy, please try to find out the name of the Anti-nausea pill.

I'll ask my wife about this as well. Unfortunately she was on a long shift today and went to bed early because of another long shift scheduled tomorrow.

Work storytime:

I had a co-worker who lost his wife to breast cancer. It was a previous job that I had, and he lost his wife several years before we met.

It took him a couple years to get to the point where he could actually function at work. According to him the only thing that kept him sane was a dog he and his wife had. When he wanted to stay in bed and die the dog made him get out and walk around the block... etc.

By the time I got to know him he was doing a lot better.

Anyways, one day at work we got to talking about Medical Marijuana.
I thought it was a joke. A way for hippies to attempt to legally toke up and feel good about their mediocrity.

However, he corrected me.
His wife and him planned dinners out, went to symphonies, and did other things knowing that things were not going well. However her nausea medication didn't work. She was always nauseous and didn't feel well enough to push it to get out of the house.
That being said she picked up some medical marijuana thinking that she would use it as a last resort. If you are going to die why not try to enjoy your last few months?

Sure enough 15 minutes after smoking one, or on an occasion eating a brownie, she could go out and spend a night on the town.

Hearing my friend tell me his story changed my tune.

I wish your friend the best.

R&D then getting FDA approval and the cost to insure against litigation would be $590 of the $600. My wife sold Zofran when it first came out. It is off patent so get the generic. Not expensive at all. Or just get a bag of pot.

I believe Dronabinol is that leafy substance in pill form that is prescribed and legal in all 50 states. I have heard that it works well in cancer patients.

I'd look for more legal ways first, but this is always a good throwback plan if you can get past it being illegal.

Check into what greenjp said or Jimmy 9190. Promethazine (Phenergan) might also be a possibility.

I was going to say Phenergan...but it's true --- special brownies work the best, or a vaporizer or water filtration system. If they decide to skip the former route, make sure it looks pretty, non twiggy, has no seeds, and doesn't smell like dirty insecticides...or it will not be as effective and require too much to become half as effective as something of quality. Best wishes to whomever is in need!
