In a new VW 2018-2019

Vr6 3.6 or 2.0T

Thoughts on both motors? Thanks!

2.0 looks super easy to service

What vehicle?

Any really but lets say in a Passat-latest model

Is this the first year of a makeover? I would not get any first year model from VW . That said, my experience is limited. I know for the MKIV jetta, it was only at the end of that run (2004) that they finally *started* to get the quality problems in hand.

3.6 is rock solid. Port injection. Good torque, very smooth. Very unique sound. Poor fuel economy.

2.0t is a long-running design. DI. Can make massive power with modifications. Most common issues have been resolved but they tend to go wrong more often than the VR.

Volkswagen has introduced for the 2018 model year a 3rd generation of their 2.0 turbocharged engine that utilizes what they refer to as the Budack cycle. It reduces engine compression in order to increase efficiency. This engine also specifies the use of a 0W-20 viscosity grade of engine oil (VW 508.00) as opposed to the former VW 502.00 high HT/HS lubricant.

Since when 3.6 VR6FSI is port injection engine?

VR6 has great sound as it is narrow angle V6 (10.6 degrees), good torque at low rpms. In Passat it should do good, in Atlas it is a snail.
2.0T will feel lighter on its feet in Passat, and in Atlas only comes with FWD. Now in Atlas from what I have read it is actually better combo then VR6 FWD since it is lighter and torque of 258 comes much sooner.
Both engines are rock solid, but VR6 in application like Atlas will be thirsty beast.

Thanks guys!!!!!
More questions have come up it seems.
EdyVW- Is the DI in the 2.0 a problem. It looks very simple to work on. I already have high hp cars so I was looking for economy-ease of working on

and would like to stay away from DI issues. So is the VR6 a port or DI? Thanks
The older VR6 had the Toyota like oil filter ordeal- don't know if that is still the case. I think the 8sp trans is having issues?

Thanks!! Is the 3.6 a port injected motor?

Good to know! I'm a 45 year long oil changer but the local VW dealer really ain't bad considering.
Like $67 with all fees for a filter-oil change. Probably will cost me $45-$50+ in supplies given the higher spec oil

why don't VW have port + DI as in europe??? that said turbo's are more complicated but well sorted today with a lot of potential with mods but without an engine warranty after said mods!!

If you're comparing the new Passats, I think they come with a lower output version of the 2.0T. Its not quite the same (at least in output numbers) as the GTI. So they're quoting 174hp, and 184tq. I will say I had a rental passat with the 1.8T last year, and it moved fine and achieved pretty good MPG. But not very powerful...

The VR6 Passat would probably be my choice, of course its a little pricier. It also gets a lower fuel economy rating. To your point about servicing... yes the 2.0T is pretty easy to change oil on. Filter on top, and I just use a fluid extractor. I did notice VW claims the 2.0 in the passat has a 6.8qt capacity... So that might be a pain/extra expense during changes. The 2.0 in my GTI only needs 6.

Check out this video review of one

Evidently not. I spoke too soon in my post.

If it means anything, I've never seen one need a carbon cleaning. I've never known the 3.6 to need much of anything at all. Of course there aren't very many out there.

Thanks Hemi

With nearly 7 quarts I think the dealer could change my oil cheaper than me- that would be a learning curve for me.
Not really bad as this dealer unlike most has a great reputation. thanks

That is what I was looking for- the mpg looks decent because I'm over 90% highway
I'd guess the VR6 could get maybe 30 mpg highway at 50-60 mph-thanks

Back in the early 00's, when dealerships started using the correct oil.

Do not worry about oil. You have actually better oil available in Wal Mart for $22-27 for 5qt then in VW dealership.
VR6 does not have CBU issues, that is primarily related to turbo applications and some FSI V6 and V8 primarily in Audi's.
3rd generation EA888 should have CBU issues resolved. As for 0W20 oil, I would steer away from that and used Castrol or Mobil1 0W40.
Oil filter in VR6 is bit harder to change in 2.0TSI it is a breeze.
