I meant to get this question in before the thread was closed. On the mobil 1 web site, the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oils 5w30 has a 40c cst of 64.4 and 100c cst of 11.2. The extended performance 10w30 has a 40c cst of 64.1 and 100c cst of 10.5.

Is this correct? why is the 5w30 thicker cold and hot than the 10w30?? I'm Wondering it the mobil website got the two oils backwards?
 
I don't see a problem.

The 5w-XX and 10w-XX numbers have nothing (or very little) to do with viscosity at 40C. And as for the viscosity at 100C, well, 10.5 and 11.2 are both within the allowable range for a 30-weight, so again, no problem there.
 
I'm gonna take a guess that 5w30 is alittle thicker hot because it is factory fill in high revving cars. Such as Corvettes and whatever else.

Because the 5w30 has a pour point of -45C while the 10w30 has a pour point of -39C, as per the spec sheet.
 
The EP part of those oils means it's 'extended performance'.
It on the thicker side of the range so it can go longer; hence it means 'extended'.
As Quattro Pete said, the pour point is a bit more important for the 5W.

You are looking at viscosity at 40 degrees and 100 degrees. The "w" stands for winter. Does 40 degrees or 100 degrees sound like a winter temperature? You are looking at the wrong part of the viscosity curve.
 
spasm - Oil # designations are a range, not an exact finite spec., as you can see.
It initially does seem odd that the 10-30 would be thinner than the 5-30, but it is what they chose when they made it.
Like mentioned, at 0deg F the '5' and '10' first # would show the '5' to be thinner there.

Spasm3, No the Mobil 1 figures are correct. The 10w30 EP oil is in fact heavier at normal operating temp's and above because it's HTHS vis is higher than that for the 5w30 EP. You'll notice the same lower KV100 spec' and higher HTHS vis with the regular Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30.

The kinematic measure of viscosity does not correlate well will the operational viscosity in an engine, HTHS vis is a very accurate measure which does correlate well.

You mean: Darn International System Units!! ... compare to imperial measurements.
