Today I brought my sister’s car (2001 Saturn L200) to the Valvoline quickie lube for an oil change and transmission service. In the past, I’ve offered to change her oil for her but she always insisted on going to Valvoline for some reason. I never really have time to change her oil anymore anyway. I used to feel uncomfortable with her taking it there, but not anymore after today. I’ve been trying to get her to change the transmission fluid for some time now, as the car now has 69k on the factory fill, but she never seems to have enough money/time to do it. I realized if I don’t bring it in myself, it’ll probably never get done.

After hearing all the horror stories here and other sites, I had my guard up and was prepared for the worst while driving there. I prepared myself to watch their every move, decline other services, make sure they did everything correctly, etc. When I got there, the tech guided me into the bay and suggested I sit inside and have a coffee. I of course declined and stood by the car. He and the manager got to work and tested all the bulbs on the car, checked the tire pressure, topped off the washer fluid, checked all other fluids, checked the air filter. (I had just changed the air filter a couple weeks ago and was prepared to call them out if they said it needed replaced.) They said it looked fine and everything else checked out OK. The tech started looking for the tranny dipstick. I told them there isn’t one. (This trans is one of those pains-in-the-butt that has the check plug instead of a dipstick…which is one of the reasons I didn’t service it myself.) They didn’t want to touch the trans either. I suppose I can’t really blame them.

So they just did the oil change. They had 2 guys on this job: One in the pit and one on top. I was impressed with how they communicated with each other. They would shout out to each other things like, “drain plug is out” “oil filter is off” “oil filter installed and tightened” “drain plug tightened” to make sure the other guy was ready for the next step and no one screwed up. The tech asked if I wanted conventional or synthetic instead of assuming anything. (I chose conventional 5w30 in case you’re wondering) He led me over to the computer and showed me the other “manufacturer recommended

” services that it’s “due” for. He said it’s due for a power steering flush and fuel system treatment. I just said no thanks and he simply said “OK” and didn’t push it any farther. He filled it up with oil, reset the oil change light, started the engine and checked for leaks, and showed me the dipstick to show that it was at the correct level. We went inside to pay and he told me all about the Valvoline engine guarantee (once again:

) and gave me a brochure, and I left.

Overall, it was a very good experience. Of course they did the obligatory up-selling on other services, but they weren’t pushy about it at all. And of course the oil change sticker says to come back in 3 months/ 3k miles, but those things are to be expected. I was worried about the quality of the work, but they had that place running like a well (Valvoline-)oiled machine. I no longer worry about my sister taking her car there.

Sounds good. As long as they don't do the hard sell on your sister the next time. Sadly women are pushed a little harder than men on the upsell at a lot of places. Maybe you found a good place!

I'm a senior tech at a valvoline instant oil change and that's exactly how I do it. before going over any recommendations I always mention that just because my computer shows it as "due" doesn't mean it's due if it's been taken care of somewhere else. However, they should have been able to service that trans (we do it all the time via the cooler lines) but evidently they either didn't have the correct equipment on hand or were too lazy.

That's prety well the exact experience I get at the 'Oil Changers' franchise I go to - they mention upsell items, but don't push it. I'm plenty happy going there.

You always hear about the bad ones so its nice to get some good feedback. They can't all be nimrods!

+1

The problem is [at least down here in the jungle] the management and help changes so often in those places that the next time you go in there it is a good chance it will be a Jiffy nightmare.

When I first moved down here I had a real good 10 minute place...After 6 months it turned into a Jiffy nightmare after new management took over.

As long as the shop doesn't have a high employee turnover rate, then she should be good to go next time.
Problem with these places in my area is they have pretty high turnover and the good ones move on and are replaced with idiots most of the time.

I take mine to Walmart every so often and haven't had any problems. They will even replace drain plugs and/or gaskets if they need it, free of charge.

I like the fact that they vacuum the carpet, wash the windshield, top off all fluids, and check all my bulbs; air filter installation is free if necessary; only charge is the cost of the air filter (5-15$ depending on the vehicle).

What's nice is they also offer carry-ins, I got a good deal on Valvoline at AutoZone and brought it in and was able to get credit off my bill since the oil was provided :) I know some shops don't like customers bringing in supplies for liability/warranty issues, etc....but WM seems to not really care.

Note: If you have an exotic vehicle (Volkswagen, or Volvo specifically); be sure to come in with your own filter. it seems either FRAM doesn't make a filter that will fit those vehicles, or WM just doesn't "sell" the filter to fit those vehicles....

Last time I went, happened to a customer with a VW, she came in and was like 3k over her oil change and very scared (she didn't say what his interval was, and I didn't get nosy lol) cause the shop manager had to send her down the street to get her own filter from AZ, before she could change her oil since they didn't sell the filter for her vehicle.

As with any "shop" you will find good and bad....I know rip off report website has a wide range of "bad" walmart oilchange (TLE) stories.....but I've never had an issue with them; but I am a frequent customer, so it could be the "loyalty" deal too :) Even if I'm grocery shopping, I'll park over by TLE, and check out at TLE (as long as I'm not purchasing produce, since they don't have scales there); so they all know me.

Before I started doing my own oil changes, I always took my Sentra to EZ Lube. Never had a problem at all. Sometimes I would stand outside and watch them. They were always really cool and loved working on cars. This place didn't have any young high school kids that thought they knew everything about cars. I always made sure the oil was at the perfect level and that all the other fluids were topped off, if needed before leaving. Of course they offereed other services which i always deny. They're a buisness trying to make more money so its expected.
