It depends on how much TV you watch. One thing to keep in mind is monthly data caps which a lot of internet service providers enforce. If you are a heavy TV watcher in a household with multiple TVs streaming content at the same time, you can blow through a 1 TB monthly data cap fairly quickly, resulting in overage fees that will quickly eat away any savings.

Here is a cheap device that will take care of your OTA DVR needs...

It has a good ATSC tuner in it. You will also need to purchase an external USB storage device. A portable external USB hard drive (2tb or less) is the best choice for storage.
It doesn't work for recording Internet streaming, nothing but a computer with the appropriate software will do this (if it can be done at all, most Internet streaming services don't allow it).

Can you erase and record over the erased USB-material, without loss of resolution?

Agree. Which is why you need a OTA antenna in an area where broadcast signals are strong.

They do. At least time warner / spectrum does in my area. It's hardly cost effective though, given you have to have their starter package in order to add ala cart services.

Donald, do you have a link to this 'It's fiber, but not fiber' thing? Curious to see what that's all about.

I'm about one click away from scrapping cable TV at the house and keeping cable innerwebs only. That would save me about $40/mo.

I can get a dozen or so (different) OTA channels with an amplified indoor antenna. The clarity/resolution of a good OTA signal is simply amazing compared to what I'm used to with cable.

I tried youtube tv.
I managed to get it to work except for local channels.
The picture quality was outstanding.
The on screen menu showed my zip code and city.
It still said it didn't know my location and to visit a site to get my local channels.
I'm in Denver,Co. not out in the boondocks.
I could not get it to work and canceled it out of frustration.
I even had a pretty tech savvy person try and no luck.
Why cant they just make it simple?
I would guess I'm not the only one this has happened to.

I have Direct T.V. satellite for $105 a month.
I just checked Direct T.V. streaming ($50 & $70 a month) and no cooking channel.
My wife loves that channel so that service is off the table.
Trust me to save $55 a month and no cooking channel?
Not going to happen.

How about saving $85/month and getting the Food Channel? Check out Philo. 58 cable channels (including the Food Channel, but no sports channels) for $20/month with no contract. It can be used on 3 devices simultaneously, it comes with a 30 day cloud DVR, and it has on-demand. The HD picture quality is excellent, and so is the service itself. No buffering. Another thing that I like is that when you choose a program to watch, it starts the program at the beginning (which can be overridden).
Philo is NOT a fly-by-night outfit. It has been around since 2013 (originally only available on college campuses) and it's owners are A&E Networks, AMC Networks, Discovery Inc. and Viacom. Some of it's big name investors include Facebook co-founder Andrew McCollum (it's CEO) and Mark Cuban. I have had them for 9 months and couldn't be happier.

Both Fubo,Sling and also Philo have the Cooking channel which can be added for $5.00/month and be much cheaper than your $105.00 service.

I pay(well clients) $80/month for Xfinity internet(150 down/6up) for my home based IT contracting job which offers the best uptime of any ISP locally.

The cost of basic cable (like YouTube tv) is an additional $20/month + ~$5 tax to keep wife happy.

Cost me over $600 all told, but that will pay for itself in a year. I get more channels than I did before with my basic cable. We are in a fringe area for reception, so needed top of the line stuff and boosters to get good reception.

For that price, I would expect the antenna to be on a tower. I lucked out by rubbish picking a decent antenna and a mast. Made my own gable mount. The only expense I had was 150 ft of high grade coax and a preamp. I get over 40 channels and don't miss paying big money for commercials. That was almost ten years ago.

Dish Network will also come out to repair the cord you just cut with a sharp knife.
Many folks cut the cord and regret it the very next month - then end-up going back to another subscription.

Do you work for a service provider? Because numbers don't support your statement-

Been over a year for us, don't regret it at all. Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube has plenty

I haven't seen a regretter so far once they have their mind set on it.

We cut the cord sometime around 2011.
Best decision we ever made. Amazing how Americans have gotten used to giving up their paycheck for garbage they dont use.

Installed a $100 RCA attic antenna which feeds what used to be our cable distribution panel to all cable outlets in the house.
5 Tvs, approx 30 channels. However for us, the best part was the superior picture of having an antenna on all the major networks, superior to super compressed pay TV picture.
Main TV has a channel master DVR which works EXACTLY like any pay TV box including TV schedule.
I did the same set up in my sons house with a TiVo for recording and TV schedule

We also have 5 Roku boxes on all TVs giving us hundreds (if not more) of unneeded channels. :o)
Our total TV bill is $20 a month for Netflex and Hulu Plus which is all opitional and Rent a redbox now and then.
