If anything, they're the EXACT people we need! The USA's speed limits are ridiculous and many towns use minor infractions as a source of income. If the speed limit is 55 but the majority of people do 70, the speed limit needs to change. (NC-24 is a great example, 2 lanes in each direction with no major intersections and a huge median) Simple as that.

A guy going 100mph down the interstate at 2AM... Who's he hurting?

Maybe I'm just a ne'er-do-well scofflaw. I'm sure someone will be along in 3, 2, 1 to tell me as much.


I'm sure that they will; and if they knew my current job their heads might actually explode- so I'm not telling...

At the initial appearance my prosecutor and I tried to get rid of as many minor cases as quickly as possible so we didn't have to deal with them later. Here's a typical exchange:

"Mr. Smith, you are charged with going 25 mph over in a 70 mph zone; how do you plead?"
"Well, I think I was speeding, but not 25 mph over."
"Okay,how fast do you think you were going?"
"Maybe 12 over."
At this point my prosecutor would chime in...
"If Mr. Smith will plead to 12 over the State recommends traffic school and court costs."
"How do you plead to 12 over Mr. Smith?"
"Guilty."

The entire transaction usually took less than 30 seconds, and-best of all-we didn't have another inane trial to set on the docket. It simply wasn't worth the hassle to try a case over 13 mph.

I agree. If I got pulled over or faced a judge, I'd want someone who is a human being with good situational awareness and compassion.

With that said, the cops and judges are looking for the same. Treat them with respect, show remorse and know when you are in the wrong and be willing to admit it.

I have to agree and disagree.

Respectful, yes.

Remorseful, yes. (for the deed itself or just for getting caught)

Willing to admit it? No sir.

The key in my jurisdiction was respect; 99% of the time the officers didn'r care what happened to a ticket once they wrote it. What DID make them care was a driver who was a jerk or said something like, "I know Mayor Joe Blow, and he'll get your ticket thrown out."
And if the person was rude and obnoxious in court?
No deals for you!
 
In today's "me first" entitlement society, there are no rules when it comes to driving. People seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to drive as fast as they want, tailgate as closely as they want, use their phones while they're driving, drive with the high beams on all the time, or worse yet, drive at night with NO lights on, not use their turn signals, etc. This type of driving really doesn't surprise me anymore...

If they can't lead by example, and break the very laws they prosecute and ticket others for, they don't need to work in the public sector. I know too many cops and PERSONALLY that drive DWI, drive recklessly and endanger the public, speed triple digits with no lights or siren for fun, and have others in the dept. look the other way. Forget about the other activities they're involved in I won't mention.

It's not that cars can't safely travel at those speeds, it's that people are too dumb to drive. After seeing a few accidents where people lost control at 80+ mph and hit a barrier or another car you will agree. If there was a minimum allowable speed on highways that was actually enforced, and harsher penalties on distracted drivers, the speed limit might be able to be raised. Until then the deaths will only rise. If you make the speed limit 80, people will do 100. Some people merge on the highway doing under 40 mph.
