is that Gunk engine cleaner?

No its a parts cleaner. You cannot put it in the engine and run it but it does clean parts really well once you have the pan and cover off.
When you have the pan off don't forget to remove the pick up tube and clean it in the Gunk also.
I soaked some rubber seals and gaskets in it and didn't see any degradation but its best to wash it off kerosene after cleaning anyway.

This is the can i used,it is carried at most parts stores i got it at AA.

This also works very well but is a little harder to find.

Hey Trav, those links are not working for me, are you refering to this

http://www.gunk.com/CAT_SC2A.asp ?

I'm just replacing the pickup tube with a new one, they are inexpensive

Defiantly was not planing on running it thru the engine, i'm removing the oil feed and return lines and just want to soak them in something that will remove the sludge & varnish, thanks

The golfs and jettas (transverse) have a quart more capacity and started using synthetic sooner (the 1.8t wasn't in the MK4 (transverse app) until 2000 (although some were considered a 99.5) the longitudinal versions being available since 95 in the A4. The longitudinal versions are what caused the TSB's by VWoA to switch to the larger oil filter and synthetic due to sludging.

I'm positive there are no boost leaks & I will double check the DV but know from past experience that the turbo is most likely cooked. I should have mentioned that this isn't my first vw or 1.8t. My fun car is a modified 1.8t w/ a 50 trim making north of 350 hp. This is my daily that I can pack up with gear and head for the mountains.....as long as everything goes right lol

It's possible that I have it backwards, but I'm reasonably sure the AEB-era B5's were not the short-capacity sludgers. I've built/raced a couple of B5 A4s and a couple of 2.7T S4/A6's. And I've never encountered a sludger, but then again, mine were always treated to synthetic only.

Best,

The PCV is not what causes the sludge so I don't know why you would ripe it out. Keep it stock & safe.

Replacing the hoses in it isn't a bad idea.

Also REPLACE the turbo oil lines, never try and clean them. Never, ever! Especially if you are fitting on another known working turbo in the case of the orginal K03 being spent.

My guess is the thermostat being bad had a lot more to do with the engine sludging than oil alone.

Fix that, and run short OCI's with MMO before trying anything drastic and invest in a real pressure gauge NOW.

Anybody wanna see a REAL 1.8T sludge-bucket? You do? Great, here's one:

Let's hope the OP's problem isn't nearly this bad.

You'd have to go WAY out of your way to sludge one up to that degree.
