annoying (in the end) oil change

I changed the oil at noon today in my Jeep with a reman engine to PU with Amsoil filter. I wanted to change it to synthetic exactly at 6000 miles, but I am 309 miles over as it has rained a bit here over the last few days.

So after everything was buttoned up, I started the car, watched till the oil pressure gauge went up to normal, then left the vehicle to look under it for oil dripping or spraying. I always to that. The Jeep locked itself with the door closed, windows up and engine running. I am not sure why it decided to lock the door when I closed it. I did roll (its not really a roll anymore) up the window as it started to rain lightly, then closed the door. I spent the next 10 minutes looking for a spare key. The tailgate was open, but given that I had just been under the vehicle and its a little wet & muddy outside I did not want to climb through unless I was forced to.

It would be a nightmare if the car doors were locked with car running and oil was dripping. That is something on my mind thinking what if I locked the doors with the car running. So usually I roll down the front windows open when I'm working on the car.

I've developed that habit too. When working on the car, drive it into place, roll down the windows then turn the car off. I do this for exactly the reason mentioned above - just in case I "oops."

On the BMW, it would be easy to pull the fuse for the fuel pump under the hood.
On the others, I'm not so sure.
The Hondas both have distributors, so it would be easy, if a little shocking (good pun?), to kill the ignition from under the hood.
Neither of the Subies have distributors, so I'm not sure how easily I could shut them off from under the hood.
Maybe I should start leaving a window down when working on the cars?

I did have the window down, the keys were on the seat. But when I started the vehicle it started to lightly rain so i rolled up the window.

My newest addition, the Mountaineer, has a code entry pad to open the door. It's great, never get locked out. Do other brands have these, or is it just Ford?

My other three vehicles won't lock you out unless you manually push the lock.

I was at a friends house fixing their computer. This time while driving out their drive, the car began to overheat. The engine had been running maybe 1 minute. I popped the hood and got out to make sure the serpentine belt was there and turning. The car then locked itself with me out of the car and the hood locked and the car starting to overheat.
I have had better days.

wow! some quick thinking along the lines suggested above (like pulling plug wires) might saved the day in a nightmare scenario like that. not sure if i 'd have had the cool head for that on the spot though.... yikes.

was it a bad thermostat?

It's a Ford thing. I love it too, very handy, but would never depend on it for something like this. That's why I also like rolling down the windows just in case.

Granted, if the engine was pouring oil and I was locked out without a choice, I would probably smash the window. Cheaper to replace a window than an engine at the end of the day, as inconvenient as it may be.

I always carry two keys to the vehicles I drive in different pockets. I enjoy the funny looks I get when it's cold and get out of my truck with it running and lock the doors.

The hood was closed by the time I realized the doors were locked. Are you suggesting to reach from underneath?
