So . . . . I just got off the phone with my oldest daughter. She and her future husband were in Orlando on their way to California. Apparently, while in a hurry to pack and get to the airport, "Rich" forgot that the last time he used his carry on was to go target shooting. As the bag glided beneath the tell all x-ray machine, it revealed a pistol at the bottom of the bag which, by the way, happened to be loaded. Caused all kinds of excitement at the airport and currently "Rich" is passing some rather anxious time in "airport jail." And to think, they're getting married in less than a month.

How the heck do you not check your bags before you fill them with your clothing?
The first thing I do before I pack a bag is to make sure it's completely empty.

BC.

He is lucky they got it before he left. If he landed in CA or NY for that matter and they found it...they would be getting married while he was serving about a decade.

You would have to know my future son in law.

His story doesn't make sense, how do you:

a) Leave target practice with a loaded weapon in a bag
b) Not remember once you get home
c) Open the bag and pack not seeing a gun large enough to go target practicing with
d) Recognize that you are going on a plane and not do a quick check of all the pockets in the bag

You are discounting the number of Darwin award recipients who forget to check whether firearms in their own hands are loaded and end up shooting themselves or others.

I may be anal retentive, BUT!

How incredibly irresponsible. That's the sort of person that should never again be allowed to possess a firearm-he's demonstrated a complete and utter regard for his responsibility as a firearm owner.

If someone owns a firearm they can't just "forget" they have it loaded and laying around in a bag, not to mention pack that very bag, and cart the bag with a loaded weapon into a busy airport. Someone demonstrating that level of irresponsibility should have their firearm rights terminated.

Reminded me of the recent Simpsons episode. Homer is getting ready to go to a convention. He pulls out his suitcase and announces he doesn't even need to pack because he never unpacked from a trip to Hawaii he took a while back. He swings it open and a roasted pig falls out, among other junk.

This was once relatively common.

Back in the mid 80's my late father did this at DFW. After examining the weapon, and questioning him, they gave him the gun back, and he flew home with it.

About six months later, a letter comes from the FAA wanting $10K, iirc, or maybe $1K, as a civil penalty for the infraction. He had a deputy sheriff card from one of the local counties so that gave him an out.

I guess nowadays they've lost their sense of humor about this type of thing.

No thanks!

I forget what airport I saw a TSA propaganda bit at, but I was amazed at how many guns they confescate per year going through scanners. A staggering number. This is nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

Why anyone would just dump a loaded gun in a bag after shooting and forget about it is beyond me. These are the people who justify fun control for their incompetence. What if a young kid had gone in his bag and ultimately fired the gun?

People like this probably shouldn't own firearms. They cause unnecessary laws to be imposed on everyone. And I don't blame the nervous ninnies for pushing it after such things.

When I was about twelve years old I got a bullet key chain at a flea market. Supposedly all the powder was drained or it was otherwise hobbled. Anyway

1) the vendor sold it to me, a kid.
2) my parents didn't notice and/or thought it was cool
3) I took this thing to (pre-9/11) Logan airport, went through security, and put my change and this stupid keychain in their tupperware.

The guard lady held it up, said "tut-tut-tut."

We were only going through security to welcome our incoming party at the gate. (Remember when you could do that?) So I asked security lady if she'd just hold my keys and I'd grab them on the way out.

Which I did. And life went on.

Somebody is going to commit an infraction today... shoplifting, assault, something that will cause real harm. They'll get less of a punishment than this dunce.
