Not sure I embrace the jewelry store owners' approach, but to each their own. Jewlery store owner installed bullet proof glass, then fired rounds into the bulletproof glass to discourage about a dozen organized and rehearsed smash and grab . All the felonious thieves learned is they have a reduced risk of getting injured in the acts of felony crimes, and they will simply repeat the acts at softer targets, or increase their tactics to commit felonies.

I did not get a grain of confidence the local LE agency is sincere about catching these organized felonious thieves''. To state " we obtained one of the license plates" is akin to stating "we obtained a description of the organized crime members". Without a doubt the plate is stolen, or the vehicle(s) are stolen.

Not thrilled with the descriptions in the clip of the felonious thieves. Terms in the video to include "would be thieves", "crew", "large group of people".

Years ago there was a jewelry store not far from where I live. They were there for decades, and robbed more than once. The owner smartened up, got a full carry permit, and over the years IIRC shot and killed two would be robbers on two different occasions. Both entered the store armed, never to rob again.

Yes, a handgun was the wrong tool to defend his store but it worked. The problem I see is he had to run to the back to get the pistol. What should he have done, letting them get into his store would have been a mistake.

Luckily he had the video or he'd probably get arrested for discharging a firearm.

One good thing, Anaheim is in Orange County, and the DA there doesn't pull punches. The old (soft on crime) LA County DA, Gascon, got kicked to the curb during reelection, and a tougher guy got elected there too. Hopefully, this store owner, won't get hassled for protecting his property.

Not sure it worked. I suspect more likely than not is the organized crime members will return, with updated tactics. The store owner spent a lot of money to protect his merchandise. The organized crime members will be back, they know that the store owner didn't install protective glass, buzz double entrance, etc., to protect cheap jewelry.

I remember during the Rodney King riots when Korean (I think) store owners stood outside their stores with rifles to protect their property.
Sadly now in states like California these store owners would probably be arrested.
Rooftop Koreans. All able body males have to serve in the military there. These guys were all trained and ready.

Why anyone would still be in business there is a mystery to me?
Exactly my thoughts, hopefully they close up and leave. I am curious how much business insurance is for these situations and if any of them go without it because the costs must be very high in CA>

Criminals have all the rights in California. It's really bizarre....
This is a result of a vocal minority, which is sympathetic towards criminals that is anti-police and believes that punishments don't work and cite recidivism accordingly. I believe there is also a racial / social issue based on historical contexts that police are racist. The idiotic answer to this is don't incarcerate them, it doesn't work and the jails are overcrowded, and that it's a social issue that will age out.

What other tool would you use against a hoard of robbers who likely have weapons that want to steal everything in the store?

Most jewelry store owners have these weapons at the ready.

Hopefully the bullet landed without harming some innocent person or property.
The bullet either bounced back in or stuck in the "glass" that is actually a polymer (plastic). I did R&D on this kind of material for years.

So what is he to do? He needs to up his game now, these criminals were ready to do bodily harm if they got in.

Everyone knows a handgun is used to fight your way to your long gun. You defend a location with more than a pistol. Time for 2 Ca compliant 10 round semi-auto rifles and not fuss with the bullet button.

Why anyone would still be in business there is a mystery to me? If someone robbed your store and you shot them, or did anything to protect your business, when the police showed up you would be arrested. Not the robbers.

No way.....
The way the West Coast is going right now reminds me of hearing about old school NYC back in the 70’s and 80’s when drugs were rampant, criminals had all the rights, and law-enforcement was mostly indifferent to it all.
