On November 10, 1943, when Lt. Walter L. Chewning Jr., the catapult officer of the USS Enterprise, saw a 9,000-pound F6F Hellcat crash-land on the flight deck and erupt in a ball of flames as it barreled toward the gun gallery, he did not run away.

Instead, Chewning deliberately ran toward the wreck, stepped on the burning external fuel tank, which was hemorrhaging and fueling the flames, forced the plane's jammed canopy open, and saved the stunned young pilot's life.

Many think that some movie stars are heroes or role models, others consider sport personal are heroes.

True heroes are the ones wearing uniform, who are sacrifice their own lives to save their brothers/sisters next to him/her.

It takes circumstance to bring out the best in a generation. Each generation is the same; the difference, is that we we don't always have the circumstances to prove it.

I worked with a Senior Chief who was pretty much the worst Engineering Duty Petty Officer I've ever worked with; he read things too literally and never seemed willing to use logic.

I found out later that he had previously saved a bunch of his brethren's lives while in the sand box. Under fire, he acted heroically, and was awarded for it. Before knowing this information, he was simply a pain in my butt, illogical and combative over the simplest things.

I also think those lads who willingly sleeping next to a nuclear reactor swimming through the ocean are the real deal as well.

At least the first not so modern submarines, most likely safer today. The same goes for the USS Enterprise, not 1, 2, 3 but 8 reactors...sheesh.
