Amtrak Auto Train to Florida

Corpus Christi might just be too far to go...it is almost 4 hours and 250 miles each way from Galveston-basically, adding a day to the trip. Even Galveston might be pushing things time-wise.

Did the Auto Train...it was pretty cool. On time at both ends...actually rolled out of Lorton about 10 minutes EARLY, rolled into Sanford on time. The staff on the train was exceptionally good...the room was very tiny but adequate, though very tight. (As in: 6" of floor space with the seats folded into a bunk.) If we do Amtrak again, we'll probably get the bedroom. We were on the lower level...a little rough, the upper level seemed a bit smoother and a lot quieter. The food was passable (if not exceptional), the free coffee/soda/tea/water was nice.

Only issue was unloading: one of the other passengers noted that bikes either came out first or last. That day...it was last.

Jarly.....when did you do the auto train? Your last post on this was back in January. You've been holding out on us...LOL!

That's pretty cool, I didn't know such a thing exist. If the auto train service expanded to the midwest and out towards the West coast or through Canada, I'd be so relieved in passing the super boring mid west landscape on my road trips.

Went in July...it was the start of the vacation that ended with crashing my bike.

The Auto Train needs dedicated stations for vehicle loading, and the car carriers are tall-it stops in Lorton because they won't fit through the tunnels and bridges further north. (It's the only train on the east coast that uses the 2-level Superliner cars.)
