Amsol in a 64 Pontiac Hydramatic

After the excellent results I had with a recent Mobil 1/GM EOS oil change in my 64 Bonnevilles 462, I want to try a synthetic in my 64 Super hydro transmission.
An automatic transmission re-builder buddy said Amsol with a new filter would work well in the old 4 speed hydramatic.
The transmission has about 1000 miles on it since it was rebuilt.
It has NAPA Dexron in it now.
This transmission originally came with Suffix "A" fluid.

Any thoughts?

Especially since the rebuilder recommends it and the rebuild is compatible with Dexron®. Dexron III® is backward compatible with most all obsolete GM fluids and the rebuilder can only choose band materials, etc that are compatible with Dexron® anyway.

What is the difference between the Torque Drive and the Universal fluids?
My engine has 435 HP and 535 TQ from the dyno record.
Its a weekend cruiser that sees some racing and a lot of stop and go city driving.

The torque drive is is intended as a replacement for the Castrol "Transsynd" fluid in Allison commercial transmissions that require the TES-295 spec. In fact it's chemically identical to the Castrol fluid.

You want the Amsoil universal ATF for this application....

TS is correct in his first paragraph. Well except it's not exactly identical but very, very close.

However, I thought I'd give you a choice. ATD is Dexron III rated and will handle high torque loads, as well the ATF. I have customers running ATD in street GM cars and trucks and some Ford transmissions with built engines. The ATF is maybe a better fit on paper, but the ATD is becoming a popular choice. Your choice, though.

I went with the ATF because its been proven to work well with my type of transmission.

But you made the best choice. I have some 50/50 race folks running ART -but these guys define "crisp" differently than most.

Just a follow up.. The synthetic in the old hydramatic didn't work out well.. Leaked all over the place and the trans shifted hard...
Best to use regular NAPA Dexron..

Hi,
pitts64 - This is a common problem with early transmissions and PS systems. IME unless the units have been rebuilt and new seal materials used it is always a "challenge" to simply change to a synthetic fluid!

Just a follow up......5 years later! LOL . Sorry to hear the synthetic didn't work out. I agree with Doug, your old seals needed some updating if synthetic is to be considered.
