I'd say that your comparison is a fair one. Yes, the Amsoil XL line was originally brought out many years ago to serve a few purposes: to provide and API Approved product for those that wanted one, to compare with the price point and performance of "mainstream" Group III synthetics, and to market to quick change lubes.
Since then the product positioning has changed slightly from a marketing standpoint. Additionally, Amsoil used to claim 7500 miles; now its 10k.

I do not get the need for anything less than the signature series Amsoil.
I think the PP (maybe PU) will always be cheaper than the Amsoil XL given its for sale at Walmart.
If I want the best in oil (and I think Amsoil signature is the best or one of them) and am willing to pay the shipping, then I do not see the point in getting anything less than Amsoil's best oil being the signature line.
It might be nice to dream of competing with PP sold at Walmart, but Amsoil XL is never going to capture that market.

Here's a perfect example: I just bought a new car. I need to use 0w20 in it for the factory-specified intervals to maintain warranty coverage. In fact, I am planning on changing the factory fill a little early, taking the second run out to 'severe schedule' mileage before switching to the regular maintenance interval.
Why would I buy AMSOIL Signature Series when I'm going to dump it in 4 - 5k miles? OE is attractively priced compared to most off-the-shelf synthetic oils at ~$6/quart. It's not crazy to step up to XL for ~$8/quart if running mildly extended drains. But I would have a difficult time spending $10.55/quart for SSO unless the price per kilomile comes out less and used oil analysis support its use.

I run very extended drains in my Golf, but it's taken a while to work up to them - including adding a bypass filter. It will be a long, long time before I get to that point with the 5 and if I wanted to run Amsoil, OE or XL are nice options. Especially because I do not shop at Great Wall of China Mart. I don't care that their oils are an everyday low price... you can frequently match or better their price by shopping oil/filter combo sales.

If you become a preferred customer the XL is usually the better buy. I use XL exclusively but I price 'other' oils from time to time. I also use Mobil 1 in my vette. I consistently find the XL as good or a better buy then the off the shelf oils. I'm thinking about using the XL line in my vette next oil service instead of Mobil 1.

I've been using it for the past couple of years in our '04 Corolla. Swap it out in the spring and fall and forget about it. We put on probably 7-8K miles with each run. Just ordered a used oil analysis kit from Blackstone, so I'll be doing a used oil analysis on it in a couple of months when its due for its fall change.
As a side bar, I just checked to see what it would cost a Preferred Customer, and a case with shipping and taxes (Indiana) came out to $6.96/quart.

I use it my Jeep with the Hemi in it and a wix filter.
Even after towing cross country in the heat and being my daily driver the XL still had a lot of life after 3000 and 5000 miles.
For the price and since I change oil every 3000/5000 depending on how much I tow the XL is an attractive oil.
If I did over 7000 miles on an oil change I would go signature.
