Well i'm very disappointed, the rear was very quiet before this oil change! Now it is noisy and starting to whine at all speeds.I'm starting to think amsoil is junk!

You are free to think what you want, but a fluid that prevents wear doesn't fix wear. Since I don't know your real name, who is your dealer? Have you contacted him?

I have hundreds of customers using SVG/SVT/SVO and none of them suddenly started having any whining after switching fluid, nor did any of them leak.

I want to help you. I suggested that NEW SAE J306 75W-90 synthetic may be too of a low viscosity for your worn differential. Rotella is probably old specification J306, high viscosity stuff. Therefor I suggest, 75W-110, but better would be 75W-140 if it's new spec stuff:

I've been pleased with the Amsoil- but will probably just stick with the Amsoil 75W90 instead of the severe gear, due to cost. I have had bad luck with my seals front and rear, and am getting tired of having the dealer install fluid I paid for instead of their own.

I'm disappointed in the info provided by Amsoil on their products,i bought the oil specified for my jeep. They should say you need to use 75-140 if thats the case.I feel like i wasted 75 dollars on oil.I went to walmarts and bought Rotella 80-90 and am going to change them out tomorrow, hopefully they are not too badly damaged by the thin amsoil! The magnets will tell the story, they were nice and clean using the Rotella. The only other thing i can think of is the Rotella hides the noises in a differential more than the amsoil.

Actually I still don't know what "Jeep" you have and what differentials are in that Jeep. I notice Amsoil's guide recommends the 75W-140 in many Jeep differentials. I guess this really puts an emphasis on working with a knowledgeable Amsoil dealer before you buy! A 1998 Jeep with over 100,000 miles - if you want to change to synthetic - I'm not recommending 75W-90 unless you live in Alaska. (Where is Nonya, btw?)

I asked who your dealer is? $75 - must have been for more than gear oil. The largest of any of the diffs hold 2 qts, max. "Thin" Amsoil? It is what it is - it meets the viscosity specification. Do you understand the table I sent?

The dealer i found in the yellow pages, bill was for 5 qts of 75-90 sg +the cost of the good oil i pulled out.Was 12+tax a qt i believe. Its a 98 wrangler wouthout tt so it calls 80-90 on the amsoil site.I'm just a little disappointed because i figured this would last a long time and save me some work...now i'm just doing it all over again for nothing more than buying the wrong grade in the 1st place. No way i'm buying another 5 qts @ 12 + just to be disappointed again. Thanks for the help,i'm staying with the cheapo oils because they run quiet.I personally believe cheap regular oil doesn't last long and turns into varnish and ruins the bearings but at least i can't hear it doing it.I also put this Amsoil in my 99TA at the same time, its noisy too now.I was using the 75-140 in there but the Amsoil site said 75-90 for that too.It should list it something like over 100k use a heavier oil etc.I figured the lighter oils would help fuel mileage a little.

Update:I pulled the plug on the rear and there was NO metal on the magnet, the problem is just like you said the oil is way too thin.I compared it to the Rotella and the Rotella is MUCH thicker.SO...here is my quick solution and i hope its ok until i can get the proper weight Amsoil.I drained 1qt out of the rear differential and replaced it with 1 qt of Rotella 85-140.I tried to get in touch with the Amsoil dealer i bought it from but she doesn't answer the phone or call back.I'm going to order 5 qts of 75-140 online.I also noticed the Amsoil was very dark coming out where the Rotella came out looking clean.I'm guessing the Amsoil cleaned some varnish off of things.Anyway Thanks for helping me try to understand these oils,i never realized how much thicker regular oils are.

Can you help me find a dealer? I looked online and the price is almost 15 a qt plus shipping. My zip is 18058 TY

i'm not amused! i took it for a little ride after changing the oil.The rear has terrible bearing rush noise now!!! that amscrap was too thin and screwed the bearing surfaces!1 i'm calling Amscrap on monday for at least some kind of refund on the oil. This is redicules! The oil was in there less than 3k miles and it ruined everything. The old oil i took out before i put the amscrap in was nice and clean....when i drained it today that amsoil was a;most black!! can't tell me it did react with something in there!

First you say there is no iron at all on the magnet. Then you say it "screwed" the bearing surfaces.

Too thin? No, it's the correct viscosity. Just not the right viscosity for a worn out differential.

3K miles in one month and the fluid turns black? Ruined everything? Have you had this Jeep since new? I'm starting to think someone put something in there to quiet it in the first place or someone messed up your pinion bearing preload. React with something? Yeah some garbage in your differential. Now that it's out of there it's noisy.

You have a mix of oils in there......

I've maintained this jeep well,it was quiet and clean before this oil was put in.I think it did something to the bearing surfaces,it sounds terrible.I'm trying to find enough Rotella to completely change it back but of course no one has it now and i'm NOT mixing oils.I'm putting standard 80-90 in it and in the car.I believe the oil was too thin and either moved dirt around or created some type of reaction to cause this.Nothing else makes sense, rears don't just start making noise for no good reason.

Dude, I hate to tell you but Amsoil Severe Gear did not cause your problem.......I have Severe Gear 75W-90 in the differentials of 2 differents Jeeps and there is no noise.

No i bought it used but one owner in very good shape. The prior owner had reciepts proving the rears wre changed every 30k.When i bought it 1st thing i did was change them and sure enough they were clean.I pulled the Rotella 80-90 out and honestly it was pefectly clean.I put in the Amsoil 75-140 and we took a long trip the next day.It seemed perfectly quiet for hrs out on the highway and fine for a few thous miles. Then i noticed a howling whining sound under steady loads @ 35-40 mph.I though it was nothing at 1st but then it starting getting worse.Today opened the plug on the rear differential, the magnet was clean but the oil was very black looking.I opened the frt differential and the oil is clean and bright.I just don't understand this. The drive train in this jeep has always been very quiet,in the past few weks i just noticed it sounded much louder in the rear while driving at slower speeds.I've used Amsoil in the car for years but only 75-140 and never had any troubles. My best guess is the amsoil cleaned all the ---- off everything and thats the black look the oil has.I'm not sure what to do at this point.I have enough Rotella to change the rear diff only.I could just let the frt be i guess,i'm kinda frustrated here trying to do the right thing.I feel if i had put the 75-140 in from the start everything would be ok.Hind sight is always 20/20 forgive me for my last post, just blowing off steam sorry.Moral here is let well enough alone i guess.

Have a good technician evaluate your rearend. It's not unheard of for them to wear out. I think you're just throwing good money after bad until you do this. If it needs a rebuild, make sure to follow the heat cycle/fluid change intervals as recommended. Your Jeep will be as godd as new then. Good luck.

I'm sure the regular oil was just masking the problem, there is no doubt i have bearing noise now.I looked at the oil this morning after driving it about 100 miles with the Rotella in there.I took a sample and carefully spread it over a large pan, there is lots of shiny bits of silver in the oil.Funny thing is the magnet doesn't have much of anything on it.I'm going to use a rare earth magnet and drag it through the old oil to just what is going on.

Update Jeep:I completely drained the jeep rear and refilled with 1/2 pint of Amsoil 75-90 mixed with 3 pints of Rotella 80-90.The rear is quiet again(thank you rear gods)

Update Pontiac Firebird:I drained the rear, the Amsoil 75-90 was clean like new.I refilled with 1&1/2 pints Amsoil 75-90,1 pint Amsoil 75-140 and 1 pint Rotella 85-140.

Both rears are quiet now,i notice adding the Rotella to the Amsoil gives it a sticky clingy property.I assume this is why it masks the noises in the rears. To sum it up i think Amsoil should make a blend.Thank You for all the replies

I agree that it's black due to the cleaning of varnish deposits. Since some companies still have not re-adjusted for Xw-110 viscosities, it's possible you had a 80w-90 gear oil that was in the viscosity range of XXw-110.

Glad it's quiet. On the next change, go with complete Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-110.
