My buddy is a diehard amsoil fan. He's always telling me how there a high detergent oil. My question is, is all synthetic oil higher detergent then conventional or is amsoil above the rest in that category?

Every companies formulation is different from one oil to the next.

Some conventional oils are LOADED with detergents.

Too general of a question. Amsoil has FULL line of oils. Look at the web site. Some oils are indeed HD oils, some are Group III full API GF-5, SM oils, some are very low SAP oils.

I believe synthetics keep engines cleaner because they don't break down (causing sludge) more so than because they have higher detergents (in general).

Group IV and V.

So, I guess it would be crazy to add more esters with an oil additive.
