There is also the PurePower filter and System 1 and others. These filters are different because the media does not have an average micron rating like non-metalic filters, they use an absolute rating. Also, because they flow so much more they may go on bypass so infrequently that one filter, the UltraFilter does not have a bypass valve. This is because the stainless steel element won't crush, like non-metalic elements. You can also see the inside of the filter every time you clean it, good entertainment for an oil geek. I'm in the middle of some testing with these filters, along with the help of Terry Dyson. I'll get into the brands and testing results when I get some more miles. I don't want to make any comments about buying or selling filters. That's not what this testing is about.
 
One concern- among others- I have is since this filter has no bypass, it mmight be possible to run into an oil starvation mode.

The bypass valve is there to protect the media. That's why you'll see different bypass setting from different filter manufacturers. Wix has 8-12 for theirs ..while PureOne has 12-16 for the same application. Some VW filters per OEM spec have 30 psi bypasses. It all depends on the durability of the media. Since the media of these cleanable mesh filters has crush collapse ratings probably in excess of any reasonable oil pressure, they don't need one. You may see reduced flow if the relief pressure of the pump is met ..but until then, the oil will merely accellerate in velocity to squeeze through the available holes. 5 gpm is 5 gpm whether your screaming down a 1/4" pipe ..or a crawling down a 6' aquaduct.
 
Gary, you may be the first person that's correctly connected the importance of the bypass setting to the media, and not the vehicle. Either way the engine still sees the oil, high setting or low setting. Bypass valves are crutches. If you ever leave a filter long enogh to plug up then you should switch to leasing, short term leases.
