Amsoil experience.

After 13K miles on my '03 Ranger 3.0L V6 I decided to switch from Motorcraft 5w-20 to
Amsoil XL7500 5W-20 synthetic. All seemed fine with the Amsoil in the crankcase until
I noticed blue smoke coming out of the tailpipe apon start up 3K miles later. No
noticeable consumption of oil other than the visible smoke.

Changed out the Amsoil and went back with the Motorcraft semi-synthetic (blend) 5W-20. Blue
smoke on start up ended over 500 miles into the Motorcraft oil. Originally went with
the Amsoil synthetic (group III?) for additional "metal on metal" wear protection instead of the MC blend.

Full synthetics do provide better protection for "metal on metal" wear but an very important
fact is that engine oil also conditions seals and gaskets (other non-metal engine elements)
and that point can easily be overlooked.

Just sharing my experience. I continue to use Motorcraft blend 5W-20 as it receives good remarks here in this forum.

Any ideas on what may have caused this blue smoke? Could it be the Amsoil oil not conditioning the valve seals? Ideas?

Started using 2K 0w30 at 52,000 miles in my '00 F-150, 4.6. Now have 93,000 and no symptoms like you have described. The truck is used to pull a 4,000 lbs. trailer, including load to the Rockies each summer, and no problems with oil usage. When I change the filter at 6 months, I top off with 3K 5w30 diesel oil.

When I used Castrol HD-30 monograde dino, I noticed a trace of blue smoke coming out the exhaust pipe on startup. Lasted for like, 2 minutes until the engine warmed up a little.

Now, I have Chevron Delo 15w40 and notice no blue smoke at all on startup.

Does this mean one oil is better than the other? No. The blue smoke bit is probably a trivial, piddling detail. If there are huge clouds of smoke though, huge clouds of smoke that never stop spewing out the exhaust pipe, there might be cause for concern.

All conventional oils have seal swell additive formulated into the oils. XL7500 is mostly a Group III dino, and very similar to Motorcraft 5W20.

How many miles on the Motorcraft oil? Any consumption with either oil?

Thanks for all the replies,

Molakule, I have not seen any blue smoke upon startup while using the MC 5W-20 and that has been over 10K miles now. No measurable oil consumption seen on the dipstick. Inside of the tailpipe is clean except for some "weathering" which I expect.

Anyone else experience any similar changes when switching over to a different engine oil?? Any Amsoil reps participating here observe similar experiences? Could it have been the Amsoil or just a fluke?

I went form the Amsoil full synthetic 5-30 to the groupIII 5-30 to run the autorx clean phase without any smoking problem.
Can't say on the 5-20 oil though.

I think it is time for Amsoil to make a POA full synthetic 5-20 oil.

Agree and I was told that they are making one. The market is going in that direction. The 2005 Hemi's are now going to be using a 5w-20 starting next year.

It will be interesting to see if they start using aluminum bearings in those engines like the other 4.7 uses now . Buster you might have got the last of the good one's
