I was doing a tune up on my 2k3 Durango this weekend. The usual, new plugs, clean the throttle body, etc, etc.. I have a CAI I bought off of Ebay and put on a cone Amsoil EaA air filter around 15,000 miles ago. I took it off to check the inside of the CAI tube and it was covered in a fine dust! I could wipe my finger in it and there was more there than I was feeling comfortable with. Once again these CAI's and cone filters have let me down when it comes to keeping the air intake clean. I am going to replace my stock box today and I have had it with CAI's period. I want to get at least 300,000 miles out of my truck so the CAI's are done with me forever!! I don't care who makes them.

It's pretty hard to mess up the install of a CAI with a cone filter and clamps. I bet it's the filter letting the dirt in.

Pablo, You KNOW it couldn't possibly be any of those things!

Just seat of the pants, or do you have evidence that EaA filters allow visible dirt to pass? Frankly it doesn't match any of my hands on experience with the EaA's. It is pretty hard to mess up an install, but it happens.

What doesn’t fit is that the same thing has happened with other filter brands……

So – to the original caller. PLEASE send the filter to your dealer or Amsoil Tech Services – if the filter is defective – Amsoil wants to know about it!

All the seals were tight. There were NO leaks in the CAI. I checked for that while I was under the hood. There was fine dust coming in from where the filter is attached to the intake tube all the way through the intake tube. All clamps were tight. This fine dust got by the filter. I drive 100 miles a day and on the highway. I don't drive on construction site's or on dusty roads. This filter and CAI are coming out forever!

This is a whole encyclopedia of info.

A used CAI system from ebay, "fine dust coming in from where the filter is attached to the intake tube " and "all clamps were tight".

Sounds like an out of round tube. A miss-application of the filter. Maybe the dirt was there from the previous owner. maybe, just maybe, all the clamps weren't tight enough. Naaaahhhhhh, it has to be a bad filter cause he sez so.

The Ebay CAI was new. There was no mis application. All is/was round and tight. The dust was from where the filter was put on the tube. Dust was coming through the filter. And yes, I say so! Dust got through my filter.

So the mechanical interface between the end of your tube and the ID of the filter leaked? And the dust came from that interface?

What make CAI was it?

Lots of them out there and some are not very good IMO. I see people making their own and trying to sell them.

I still have my OEM airbox. The TonyA delivered close to the same HP as K&N and Volant. You can use this airbox for your own DIY mod. The Fram AirHog filter is about $30. I'll sell you this air box for $25 + shipping. After doing the mod you can resell your box or keep it to install when you take your CTS in for warranty work. From the outside you will look 100% stock.

Any takers??

Guys, it's clear that this conclusion was reached through rigorous analysis and careful consideration. You can try all you want, but you'll never find holes in it.

Besides, of two items involved -- one generic piece of eBay junk, and one attentively developed product from a respected company in the field -- which one is more likely to be the point of failure? Obviously the latter. What do you want him to do? Measure the tube with a caliper to make sure it's round? Pressurize the intake tract to check for other leaks? Pfff...

When a man knows his filter is letting in dirt, then ****it, his filter is letting in dirt.

so many things could happen, I have seen many people
overlook the simple stuff that is poking them in the face.
if the air filter is an inferior product as you suggest then many more irrate owners will post their fiasco here.
I have 3 EAA filters in service and no dust is passing into my engines like it did with the K&N filters

there is no such thing as a good cai. it aint rocket science to properly install one as intended by the manufacture. you cant beat a paper filter for filtering ability. some of them cai's sure do look nice and they flow a lot of air and debris also. anyone that doesn't understand this shouldn't be a bitoger!!

FYI. The stock air filter components are back in and the only difference is that the noise is gone when I step on the gas. I will keep an eye on my mileage also. I bet it is the same as before.
