Just to let you know that the thickness of the media is about 1 1/2 inches from the outside to the inside.
Then length of the media top to bottom is 3 1/2 inches. This is the BE-90 element. Amsoil also makes to other elements the BE-100 and BE-110.
I don't know the lenght of those media, but the filters are 6,8 and 10 Inches respectively. So I would guess that you would get 5+ inches and 7+ inches in the other 2 filters.

It looks like as a rule of thumb, one or two inches at the top and bottom are used by the supporting hardware for mounting and valving. Not picking on Amsoil, just an observation of most filters.
