Vehicle:
2006 Scion tC

Oil:
Amsoil AZO 0W30

Oil additives:
None

Make up oil added:
Added 2 quarts over the course of the 7,500 miles. Consumption went up big time compared to the OE that i ran for 2 runs previously. Can't say for sure if it's the AZO or my aggressive driving style that's at fault... we'll see with the next fill.

Engine oil capacity:
4.1

Oil filter:
TINY Mobil 1 (much smaller then the OEM filter)

Air filter:
Whatever cheap piece of [censored] air filter is on the aftermarket "Cold Air Intake" that's on the car. Thinking of eventually replacing it with an Amsoil cone when the time comes.

USE: Mostly highway @ 80/20. The wife does roughly 50 miles daily round trip to work and back and i beat on it when she gets home while i do my errands, ranking up another 50 miles or so while bouncing off the rev limiter, so the miles rack up quick.

Here's a quick pic for your viewing pleasure. (sorry for the blurry picture, it's hard to capture with my phone camera)

Back to the report... I did a VOA on AZO last year and this oil is from the same batch.
The VOA can be found here: Amsoil AZO VOA

The oil is currently still in use as i plan to run it for 10,000 miles. What are you guy's thoughts seeing the TAN surpassing TBN already with Blackstone saying the oil is fairly acidic...? Think it's safe to keep running for another 2,500 miles?

12.6 starting TBN according to the VOA i did on this exact oil.

I did add 2 quarts of oil during the run as well, so keep that in mind.

yep, it actually ate more as it was low when I pulled the sample and required half a quart of top off. It would have eaten 3 quarts by the time I reach 10k on the oil

Love the higher Moly since they went from the SSO.

Look at that sweet Flash Point!

Actually, here's another UOA i did with the previous formula of AZO after 7,500 miles in my 07 Civic. TBN is 5.8 with minimal top off oil added.

Amsoil SSO 0w30

Amsoil's "Signature Series" oils can definitely do 10k with ease in just about anything... It's the other 15,000 miles that i'm worried about (seeing as it's rated for 25,000 miles of use)

Woah, that flash point is downright sexy even with some fuel present!

Air filtration doesn't seem to be an issue. Any top-tier oil filter that is bigger than the M1? Just curious.

Looks great. The universal averages are at what mileage? Thanks.

Seems like boron is slightly lower than before, but only in concentration. A healthy dose there with plenty of moly and of course calcium.

Might explain some of the TBN being so high after 7,500 miles. On the other hand, 30% remaining TBN is a rule of thumb some go by as far as when to change your lube which would mean an oil change by around 3.7 TBN...I think that rule of thumb is relative to dino oil though. In other words, for this combo and UOA report I'd say down to 2.5-3.0 is ideal for 'got your moneys worth' guys and not stretching beyond remaining headroom approach.

The Universal Average are based on 5,100 miles.

The tC has a maintenance mileage counter which can be set to trigger anywhere from 1-5k miles, with 5,000 being the highest Toyota recommends for this car, hence the first 2 previous runs on Amsoil OE were to establish a good base before proceeding forward with Extended OCIs.

I think i'll stop @ 2.0 TBN with this oil. Right now i'm @ 8,000 miles already and about leaving for a business trip which will rake up about 800-900 miles round trip today. I'll resample @ 10k and go from there. Wish me luck...

Someone posted a thread about an over-sized oil filter for the 2AZ-FE motor but there was no concrete answer if anything bigger will work.

I haven't examined all the available oil filters yet for the tC. Only looked at M1 and the OEM unit i pulled off the block during the first oil change i did on it 17,000 miles ago. I need to see what Amsoil offers, check out K&N, RP, Bosch D+ as well as do some research on how good the Toyota TRD oil filter is compared to their OEM unit.

Either way, i'm not TOO worried about the small M1. @ 10K OCIs i think it should be fine.

I'd say 10k miles is certainly doable.

The TBN is that number only because you keep refreshing the pot, so to speak. In 10k miles, you'll replace more than 1/2 the entire sump! TBN would be lower if not for the top-offs.

Makes one wonder about our whole topic of Noack and FP issues. Why and where is this oil disappearing?

Wear number wise, it's doing a decent job. But it's never going to be cost effective because you're having to replenish it too often.

Ever run a dino oil? How did it do? I am NOT stating a dino would be better here; I'm just looking for some kind of base level for comparison/contrast of performance. I have no idea if a dino would be "better" here, given the massive oil consumption. I'm just curious at this point.

For that kind of oil use I'd pick a cheaper oil. Had you not replenished the oil due to use, that oil might have been shot. It would have been interesting to see how well it would have held up if you didn't have to add any oil, guess we'll never know for sure. If you want to stick with Amsoil XL might be better for your app, and cheaper. JMO

Well if I wanna go a cheaper route, Amsoil OE definitely did very well in the engine and only burned off about half a quart in 5,000 miles.

XL doesn't make any sense to me and it didn't seem to perform very well when I tried it in my Civic with a TBN of 1.9 after 9,000 miles.

I have no idea what's causing the extra consumption all the sudden but I'll definitely do another run with AZO to get more data and see if consumption slows down and to use up the leftover quarts from the case. I'm hoping that it will stabilize with the next.

I'd the motor itself is the culprit of the consumption then any oil will continue to burn off at the same rate. I'd rather not be under the car every 5k miles so the extended drain is a real plus for me.

It's never had dino oil in it. Always various synthetics with Royal Purple being used moat of the time and leading up until I started servicing it with Amsoil about 17k ago.

The car is modified and I sleep better at night with synthetic in the block (even a cheap one like OE) knowing the engine is protected well (not saying that dino won't protect just as well I just like synthetic oil for piece of mind.)

Then OE it is, LOL. Seems cheaper is better at least in this case. I'd be willing to bet PYB would probably do as well as OE if you had to top up between changes, as often as you did with AZO.

Certainly a lot of different combinations you can try that's for sure. But I hear you about using a synthetic, I prefer them in anything I value. OTOH my beater gets whatever is on sale.

As good as PYB is, its not good enough for me and what I think this engine needs based on the driving style and conditions that it sees.

I stocked up on a ton of dino and will switch the Camry over to conventional as its closing in on beater status.

The wife's tC gets the good stuff for now.

That remark was based on the oil use and the refreshing of the sump as a result of it, that's all. You'd be surprised how well some of these good dino oils are doing. But as I said anything I care about gets synthetic, you feel the same way. I was just tossing that out there that's all.

Oh I know, I've been keeping an eye on all the dino UOA's and VOA's alike. It's also the reason why I bought dino oil for the first time in over 5-6 years for use in my cars and others I service (always used synthetics)

Of course the Kmart deal was also too good to pass up as well

I guess the fun of the experiment would be to go back to OE Amsoil, and see if the oil consumption rate goes back down.

Wow - wouldn't that be interesting if it did?
